Route 66 Road Trip Advice?
We have two huge (hundreds of thousands of acres) burning out of control in wildfires along the eastern half of the state. Because of the winds the forest service has no prediction of when they might be contained (not out, but surrounded). Roads are being closed depending on proximity and many small towns are already evacuated or in preparation for it.
I-40 and other major AZ state highways could be effected by the fires.
Check AZ511 for AZ highway conditions (scroll down to the bottom of the list for fire restricted roadways)...

Not much to do to the car, As far as the trip, While going through AZ be sure to stop in Oatman, It is an old western town where the burros come down everyday looking for handouts, Have some carrots with you. Also if you have never seen the Grand Canyon.. You must see it...

Lucille's in Weatherford, Oklahoma is a good place to eat. I have never been able to eat everything on my plate there (large portions, not bad food).

Take your time and stop often. Best memory of mine from the trip was pulling into Tucumcari (spelled wrong for sure) NM right at dusk with all the neon
Your spelling is actually pretty damn good or you just got lucky. I'd be most careful going through West-Texas! We took a trip to Chicago last summer and ran into some UNUSUALLY STRANGE law enforcement folks out in them parts. Long story but would be a great beginning to a Stephen King novel. I'm just glad to have made it out of there alive and w/o any "violations."

If you like spicy food then must try some of the New Mexico Grn. and/or Red Chili. - not like Tx. chile and is much better than AZ & CA versions of similar styles.
My wife and I brought a log book along with us to document a lot of the interseting and fun stories/experiences that occured along our 3,500 miles journey. It'll be great to open again sometime down the road for some good laughs.
