Default New to me with issues NLT

Not Life Threatening.

At least I don't think so. I just picked up a 2002 Z06 and really like it. But.........

1) It's too loud. Can I trade someond for a stock exhaust or does the Borla Cat Back eliminate too many stock parts? Or does someone have an idea how to quiet this down?

2) Is an aftermarket partition for the rear worth the money? I think I could make one out of particle board and carpet it.

3) My manual says the car should have skip shift (it doesn't). Is this a big deal?

4) The manual also says the trans. will go into first < 40 mph. Mine won't go into first at a stop without grinding. Is this something someone added or is the first gear syncro going? The seller told me it won't go into first at anything > 6 mph as if it was a factory feature.

5) This has an aftermarket shifter (I don't know which brand), and it is really hard to shift. Is this normal? My '90 roadster shifted great by comparison.

Thanks in advance

Jim

1st Congrads on the Vette and welcome to the forum.

The only things I could comment on are the partition I was going to make one, for $160 to my door not to bad a deal and I'm happy with it.

Also, about the exhaust I'm sure someone will have a great deal for ya and some stock unit, without looking under the car to see what all has been changed out, would be hard to comment on. Could have headers and x-pipe and lastly the Borla's.....All those components are bolt on, unless someone did some serious modding, But again without seeing it you wouldn't know for sure. good luck and have fun

I made my own partition and package tray for my Z06 which has long tube headers and Borla exhaust. The partition cut down on the sound quite a bit, and I have a nice useable package tray area 4 inches deep that holds 2 cups, CDs, and a couple other good sized recessed areas. The whole setup was a lot cheaper than $ 160 and the partition is a nice tight press in fit with no fasteners required.

Be happy the skip shift is gone. You do not want it.
If the tranny will not shift into first without grinding you have a problem. Could be the clutch is not releasing all the way or the first gear synchros are going. Not too good either way.
If the after market shifter is a short throw shifter you will find it takes a bit more effort to change gears. I have one in my Z06 and once I got used to it I really like it. Now the shifter in our BMW M roadster seems floppy and imprecise by comparison.
Good luck with the first gear problem.

Just put the CAGS by-pass in on Wed. The 1st to 4th was a major irritant.

1) I went through three exhausts before returning to stock Titanium. In my opinion, they are quiet enough to be wife and HOA approved. I am looking to get electric cut outs on my x-pipe in the future. If you do have headers, go with the stock Titanium mufflers for sure.

2) I have both a solid and foam partition. The foam sealed well, but let more sound through. The solid ones are better if they fit properly.

3) Skip shift = pain in the ***. I suspect your car has a tune. Any other mods you are aware of?

4) Agreed. You have a trans issue that needs to be fixed. My 2002 Z06 downshifts to first at 40 mph.

5) I've also been through three shifters: Stock, B&M, and now RSD Snap Shifter. Stock one felt vague and not very positive with long throws. The B&M was positive but notchy and high effort. The RSD Snap Shifter is very smooth and easy to use. Just about perfect.

as others have said - could have a clutch not fully disengaging...get the car on a flat surface, put it in first, release the brakes, and rev the motor - see if the car creeps forward Any - if so its likely a clutch release problem which could be the slave or master cyl.

I'm going to look in to a partition, either home made or store bought, and see how that affects the noise. The system is too much money to give away.

There is a skip shift kit in it because the light comes on saying first to fourth but it doesn't so I'm happy there.

I'm getting used to the shifter and kinda like it.

I'm sure there is an issue with first gear. Clutch works fine. Any recommendations? I have lots of wrenches and know how to use them. Does doing a tranny involve dropping the whole drive train?

Thanks, guys, for the help.

Yes it does, not to bad a job though. Go here: http://www.cajundude.com/c5techhome.htm and click on Dope's clutch how to writeup to see what you're up against. Sounds like it might be a wearing synchro, how fast are you going when you downshift?

Also, post up a pic of the exhaust and we'll be able to tell you what it is. Taking a pic of the headers would be a good idea too if it's really that loud.

The stock Titanium exhause is a great system, and lighter weight than any aftermarket option. I would highly recommend it.

There is a CAD drawing of a template for it floating around the forum somewhere. others also have life size templates they could mail you upon request.

Check your shifter alignment. This is a very common problem for people having a hard time getting into 1st.

Thanks in advance

Do a search, and find out how to align your shifter; it's very easy. To deal with your first gear problem, follow red rocket's advice. Most likely a clutch problem. Search for "Ranger method" that shows you how to clean your clutch fluid. If it's not one of those things, your clutch is not fully disengaging. Very common problem, but there are multiple problem areas in the C5's clutch system. Clutches are cheaper than transmissions, but both are a PITA to access.

I can see the headers and they are cast iron, so stock I would say. I looked under the rear end and the system is Borla and it looks like the Touring setup connected to stock pipes. A muffler on each side, one in and one out with mufflers aligned with axle, Borla stamped on the side, and the outlets wye into two each for four rolled angle cut tips.

I can get into first only when stopped and it is best to do it from another gear, not neutral and then first. I can sit all day in first with the clutch in and no discernible drag, so I'm ruling out the clutch. I will look into adjusting the shift mechanism, but I think there is something wrong with the trans.

I'm learning how to drive a low noise profile by shifting at lower speeds and less power. I still haven't ruled out stock exhaust trades though. Now I'm going to search for partitions and shifter adjustments.

Man does this thing have HP.

Congrats on the getting the vette. Good luck with the issues. You'll find that there are a lot of folks on here that are very knowledgeable and willing to share that knowledge. A very good forum!

I'll take this car to the oil change place Monday and get some pics of the exhaust.

I've been reading about trans repairs and am just wondering if taking out the trans. would be possible without dropping the drive line. It has to be removed anyway, so.....

I'm going to drain the oil in all the boxes and see what I get in the way of chips or whatever. I looked at the way shift kits are installed and it doesn't look like a shifter adjustment would help my issue. I will also examine clutch issues.
