I have a noise that seems to be getting louder over time only when my A/C is turned on as soon as you shut the A/C off it off it stops, which leads me to believe it is something to do with the A/C clutch any help would be appreciated I have sprayed the belts all down with belt dressing to help locate the problem to the A/C compressor area.
I had a rattling sound out of my '99 which is a bad compressor, yet surprisingly it worked just fine with lots of cold air. I finally replaced it and no more noise.
I had the dealer do it for me to insure it was all done with a new compressor and not a rebuilt. As I remember, the bill came to $1400 but that was several years ago.
The A/C does blow cold and the sound is like two metal plates rubbing together with a squeaking sound.
Sounds like the A/C compressor clutch to me. Mine is starting make a similar noise. At least clutch failure doesn't contaminate the system internals like a failed compressor.
Shop around to see if anyone sells a replacement clutch. Often time these days you cannot buy the consumable parts for certain components. The only option is to purchase the whole part.
It's the AC compressor. I know because this just happened to me last week. Overtime it will begin getting pretty noisy (uncontrollably) over 2k rpm. You will know if you let it go without letting a mechanic look at it...and you eventually smell freon, which is after the compressor has gone out. Mine went from somewhat noticeable to broken in about a week. Hopefully it might just be a vacuum seal or something. That would be only 350ish versus 1600 for the compressor.
Good Luck

Reason: specificity
I am finishing up changing mine now. Got vacuum pulled just waiting on morning to finish. Not too bad a job just a lot to do. I had the same noise exactly. Compressor about $450 from Gene at gmpartshouse. Be sure to use a new compressor. I have had zero luck with rebuilds over the years. The quote above should include changing the accumulator and orifice tube. Must do's when changing a compressor. Good luck.

Okay, it sounds like the clutch, like others have said, if you ever have to put gauges on it and you turn the AC on and the pressures stay the same or equal between the two then that means it has bypassed inside and the inwards have failed -
In either case at this point your clutch will continue to fail and that is much better than the insides failing and leaving debris - at this point it is pretty straight forward and you can replace the AC compressor without having to replace the condensor and other supporting mods -
Wow guy's thanks so much for all the advice, I had a feeling it was the compressor/clutch $450.00 is not the end of the world for a compressor but it looks like it's time to see what the local A/C shop gives for a compressor install quote.
