Default Seat repair

noticed that the horizontal seam on one of my drivers side seat bolster is beginning to split. Would like to glue or reinforce before it completely separates.

I thought of superglue foe leather and vinyl or that stuff called shoe goop.

I believe the bolsters are vinyl.

any experience or suggestions. Do not want to re cover etc.

Is it the seat bottom or the seat back seam splitting out?

I had this happen on my driver's seat. Repair only lasted a short time. Had to replace the seat cover.
luckily, it was still under warranty at the time.

the seam runs horizontally on the side back bolster; closest to the door. It attaches top and bottom pieces.

That's exactly what happened to mine. The driver's side seam was separating, and you could see the white lining of the seat cover.

Yep that's the culprit. I believe the material is not leather but some type of vinyl.

I am thinking of trying to just glue the seam shut. the only stress is entering and exiting the car. there seems to be enough slack in the material on either side of the seam to relieve stress on the seam. Looks like the material ripped where it was sewn originally.

any thoughts about what type of glue to try?

At some hardware or auto parts stores you can buy a small tube of VLP which is used for repairs on leather or vinyl. I have done upholstery on collector cars for 25 years and used VLP on the same seam of my Z06 and on my C4 seats. You will also need some SEM vinly spray of the correct color to touch up the area repaired. Do not sprau the vinyl spray on the seat. Spray some into the lid and use a small brush to color the repaired area.

Default question

Is VLP a brand or a type of glue?

Thanks for the info. will try this as soon as I get the correct glue.

I had mine repaired by a local upholstery shop. Replaced the panel and re-covered my console lid. Both for $125. Did a great job and has held up for over a year now.

You can try glue, but I think the only long term repair would be to have the cover removed by an upholstery shop, and re-sewn from the inside.
The glue will work temporarily, but eventually it will separate again.

VLP is not a glue. It is a viscous liquid that fills in the open spot and adheres very well to the vinyl or leather around it. It dries and is flexible. You need to paint it with vinly spray as it is colorless.

I got an estimate on fixing mine. The upholstery shop wanted $170, and said it may last a month, it may a year, no guarantees. That was for replacing the vinyl panel. I ended up having DJ Motorsports reupholster my seats in all leather.

I have same split on our oak colored 03. Went to WallyMart and got vinyl repair kit in auto section. Spent about 30 min mixing to get the right shade of tan (black would have been simple) You heat the soft gloop to set it. It has been a year, small hair line crack in the repair but it is better than the 1/8" wide tear where you could see the white stiching.
