I'm might go to the track next month, I'm new to drag racing and i was hoping if i can get some pointers. Should i start with 1st and shift like it was a stick(will this damage my trans over time) or just leave it on drive.
<=== not a drag racer and never been to the track....but...
I doubt you're gonna shift as well as the programmed shifts manually, I'd probably leave it in 3 or D and see how it goes.
If you're leaving AH/TC on I think you're supposed to drive around the burn out, stage, hold the rpms as high as your able to (probably 1800 or so with a stock tranny) and when the last yellow lights, release and nail it (simultaneously).
Im sure someone who actually knows what they are talking about will be along soon, good luck

I have taken my A4 with 3.15 gears to the track a number of times, I always leave it in drive with TC turned off, I never go through the water, I spin the tires just a little bit to get the crud off the tires and tack them up a bit, I will power brake the car a bit before launch, This is how I do it, Your way can differ.

A4 with 3.15
Thanks
When you race with an A4 you want to put it in 3rd Gear and leave it there when you launch - Turn "OFF" the traction control.
You will have 3 Yellow lights, when it gets to the LAST Yellow light that is when you mash the throttle, you will not Red Light when you do this because it will be Green as soon as you move - in this way you cut a good light!
Put one foot on the brake and one on the throttle and bring the RPM's up to about 1500 while you are waiting for the Yellow lights to illuminate then mash the throttle on the last Yellow! = This will give you a good launch -
"IF" the Vette starts to go sideways - IMMEDIATELY let off the throttle and straighten up, don't worry about that run you will be able to do another, it is better to have your Vette in one piece when you go home and not into a wall!
Optional burnout but I do not suggest it with street radials, just go around the water and do not try to double foot the brake and the throttle to do a burn out you will start to do damage to a lot of parts.

I do basically the same thing with my 04 with an A4 and 3.15's.I race on the average twice a week.I however do not power brake my car as I found that if the computer senses engine load with no speed it starts cutting back the timing. With much practice I run 12.82's all day long in 90 plus heat and humidity. I just have a Vararam and duct with Corsa touring catback.BTW let it shift itself, you are not as quick or consistant as the computer.

My car runs faster if you leave it in 3rd. it has 3.15 rear When i run street tires if i try to power brake to build rpm. IT will start spinning about 1100 rpms .When i run drag radials it will hold to about 1800 rpms BUT there is no difference in my 60 foot or 1/8 mile times Bone stock 2000 vert 2.05 sixty foot 8 .58 1/8 mile at 87 mph

I have got my sixty foot times down in the 1.90's with practice.
