Door guards

Why do some vettes have door guards and some of the same year don't. I have a 2001 Bowlong green coupe that has door guards. I like the way it looks with them, but was just curious.

They are called BSM, Body Side Moldings, It was an option, Some like them and some don't, My 2002 Coupe had them and after 2 years I took them off and glad I did.

I have then and think the car looks good with or without them I keep them because its easier to paint the BSM than a door

As said above, they were an option on the C5 - I happen to like the looks of them on the car, but none of my cars has had them on there.
