After a weekend drive, I noticed that I had an oil leak. I brought my 99 FRC into a local shop. The oil leak was coming out from the Harmonic Balances which was loose. The shop tightened the Harmonic Balancer and the oil leak is now gone. Now I have a chirping sound at all RPM's. At first I thought it was because the shop degreased the motor and I thought that I had some degreaser on the belts and it would wear off. Well its still chirping. Whats my next course of action?
It is hard to believe that an oil leak was caused by a loose HB bolt first of all. I would do my best to determine WHERE the chirp is coming from. I know this is easier said than done but.............my HB separated and in the process moved on the crank toward the engine and eventually wore a rather large hole in the oil pan and the timing chain cover. So..................you might want to verify that the HB is in the correct place on the crank, use whatever means you can to determine where the chirping is coming from, and then replace whatever part is faulty. I see lots of forum members who just replace everything in the system ( serp belt, idler pulley, etc), still have the noise and are perplexed as to why they have the problem. Finding the root cause of the noise is the answer IMHO. Good luck.
