Take the ferry over to Wiarton from Manitoulin island, a lot nicer than driving all the way around! (The ferry is cool!)
When your around Niagara Falls, go to "Niagara On The Lake" very nice little town.
Also lots of vineyards along the way to Niagara.
Have fun !

Agreed, Niagra on the Lake (Canadian side) is beautiful, nice restaurants. The Canadian Niagra Falls are so much more specatular than the US one. Whole area is so beaultiful both sides.
At Ste Sainte Marie, MI there was an awesome restaurant called "Antlers", hope it is still there, havent been there for many years, great food and a spectacular collection of stuffed animals.

Looking forward to going back their sooner than later, that Michigan UP is a neat part of the world.

Was born and raised in Bflo/Niagara area.
Although the Canadian view of the falls is spectacular it is just that, a view. On the American side you are more intimate with the falls and basically "in it" . Also , much less crowded, and no customs check .
If you don't ever expect to go back plan on more than one day and do all the tourist stuff , boat rides, cave of the winds, observation towers. walk along the rapids on goat island, etc, Hope for nice weather.
Good luck

Thanks for the replays, places to eat are #1 for me, also the ferry looks good. The weather is a concern of mine, what is the norm for mid Oct.?

If you're looking for entertainment along the way, Toronto is always a great place to stop. Lots of places to eat there as well. You can explore downtown Toronto and check out the CN Tower (pretty standard tourist spot). If you want to go shopping (mostly for the wife) you can check out the Eaton's center or go along Bloor St. :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloor_Street

"The stretch of Bloor between Yonge Street and Avenue Road (often nicknamed "Mink Mile" or "Fashion Mile"[3]) and its neighbouring side streets are one of the most popular and trendy shopping areas in Toronto, housing several large, well-known fashion and jewelry companies.

Bloor Street/Yorkville has been recognized as one of the most luxurious shopping streets in North America, being compared to New York's Fifth Avenue, Chicago's Magnificent Mile, and Los Angeles's Rodeo Drive.[citation needed]

Bloor Street commands an average rent of $300 per square foot, making it the third most expensive retail space in North America.[4] Bloor was named in 2008 the seventh most expensive shopping street in the world by Fortune Magazine, claiming tenants can make $1,500 to $4,500 per square foot in sales.[5]"

Also, if you're into "learning" theres the Royal Ontario Museum. Usually they have a feature exhibit that could be interesting. And if you're into hockey, The Hockey Hall of Fame could be more of a guy thing to do.

Thats my input for Toronto along the way!

October is usually a nice cruising time, lots of good fall color, and temps are usually pretty cool but just light jacket weather, with occasional rainy days.
The "Cheechemon" Ferry (I probably spelt that wrong) gets shut down for the winter, so you need to take it before that happens, check the schedule.
When coming down through Ontario take Airport road towards Toronto, its full of really great rolling hills with spectacular views !
