Default axle seal leak!

I think I may have an axle seal leak. I have seen on the forum that this is some what common. I was just wondering what a repair bill I may be expecting? Thanks for any input.

unless its pissing fluid, dont touch it. Not worth the hastle unless it gets progressively worse. I have a tiny sweat on the diff plate gasket and I mean tiny. If it drips a 1 drop a week thats even too much. Eventually when I replace my diff fluid I'll replace the gasket at the same time. Makes draining the fluid easier. lol

Minor sweat, just keep an eye on it. Truly leaking, get it fixed. Seal is a few bucks. pretty cheap. its the labour that adds up and that cost will depend on your relationship with your mechanic.

Driver's side, right? I just had mine done at my Chevy dealer (I trust them) in May of this year. Cost $486.00..mostly labor. The deal is though, I had it done in 2006, but the mechanic followed GM's tech order. This time, he said, the process and sealer is better.

Thanks for the reply. I will be going to the dealership as well as to insure that the job is done right. Your repair bill is about what I was expecting.

How long did it take to do the job?
Where at?
Parts & labor?
Was the differential fluid changed out too?

Just curious.
Thanx ericsfrc

Beware and shop around. Had mine fixed in June of 08 = $570.50 (and that was supposed to include a 10% club disct.) they said they needed the car over night. I was new to Corvette life then so learned an expensive lesson - Thanks Rydell Chevrolet in Van Nuys, CA for teaching me about Corvette tax. I trusted them since one of the club members worked there, big mistake. To add insult to injury, it started leaking again after less than 2 yrs so I got taken for sure.

Then on top of that, new estimates from my mechanic and Chevy dealership, where I now live (one I trust) are $305 and $430 respectively (4 yrs later and $265 - $140 less, go figure). Hmmm, now I'm really PO'd at Rydell, but at least I have honest mechanics now and they both say leak is so slow I can wait. Plus I'm glad to know when I do get it fixed it won't cost as much as it did when I got soaked in 08.

I've heard and been told here on CF that the GM sealant isn't the best and to try Hylomar but it isn't anaerobic as far as I can tell. Anyone, have any ideas on which sealant is best? Next time I fix it I want to be the last time.

I thought I had a leak in mine too.... till I realized it was just from the blow off / overpressure valve at the top of the Diff.

A few high speed runs I did weeks earlier had popped the overpressure valve at the top of my diff. Made a mess of the Diff, and I thought i had a leak. I cleaned the diff all around it and waited to see where the leak was coming from. Been a year and no leak.... Must have been the blow off valve.

I did mine myself, cost about 75.00 for the seals and the differential fluid. I'm an average mechanic, this was an easy job! Try this link for step by step pics and instructions.....
