I would take it and get it looked at. the last thing you want is to be stuck in a parking lot or something because your car will start but cant turn the steering wheel Happened to a friend of mine and it wasnt pretty

Check your battery, may be time for a replacement. Low batteries will often trigger that message. As a precaution I recommend purchasing and installing a Column Lock Bypass:

Here are some helpful links....

How to install a Column Lock Bypass:

You can get a CLB Kit from either of these vendors:

Maybe OP could just print all 79 pages and keep them in the car so he has something to do when he's stranded with a locked steering wheel waiting on a wrecker?

Then comes the "shoulda, woulda. coulda" syndrome!

Don't you think everything has already been discussed here? The guy is looking for help. Not everyone can turn a wrench or keypunch their way through a help forum.

Have your car looked at, I had the SERVICE COLUMN LOCK message last week in Spearfish South Dakota. I already had the first recall done on the column lock. This time the car would not go over 2 miles an hour, reset the message disconnected the battery and restarted the engine. Same message and car would not go over 2 mph, so this time I put in a new batttery, same result. After speneding an extra night in a hotel took car to dealer in Spearfish and they ordered new column lock, they had none in stock, part had to be sent UPS. Long story short with the cost of getting the car fixed, extra night in hotel, rental car for over a week and misc. expenses I spent over 2 grand. Read the other posts and get your car in a shop, if I had only put the bypass on the car I could of saved alot of money.

No, but if they can start a new thread, they can read a sticky located at the top of the Tech section. I was nice enough to provide a direct link for him since he didn't see it.

Is it possible to remove the lock plate in the column and replace it with the plate they put in the automatic cars that were included in the early recalls for the automatics?

It's just as easy to remove the panel fascia and once the actuator retracts (key in and to ON), disconnect the power cable from the actuator.

Problem is, there is more to the issue then just the "locking" of the steering wheel. The computer needs to know that a certain voltage is present and that the actuator successfully unlocked the column. That's where the CLB (bypass) module comes into play. It sends the appropriate signal back to the computer, thus allowing the system continue with the start and run sequence.

(To change the lock plate, you'd have to disarm the SRS, then disassembly the steering wheel, then remove the steering wheel (requires a puller), then access the lock plate and replace it with the new plate made available during the recall, replace and re-assemble everything.)
