If you have the original style water pump - the thermostat is sold as a part of the assembly (in the neck). When you purchase a new thermostat, it comes in the neck.
If you upgrade to a 2004+ water pump, then the thermostat is a separate unit.
Just a sidenote about some aftermarket 160* stats. I bought one and soon noticed my car would reach 247* + sitting at stoplights. When I got on it under hard throttle it would sweep past 250* until I backed off and let it cool down.
I suspected the stat wouldn't open up enough to allow more coolant to flow. So I reinstalled my original 190* and the car never overheated again. Never wanted to retry another using that stat from that auto parts store. Maybe next year I'll try again with a different thermostat brand name.
Oh that 160* wasn't even 30 days old, but they did have a warranty!

So if I am understanding blacksedan87 correctly, he is saying that if you have the older style water pump you cannot remove the T-Stat but must purchase the water pump/neck with the T-Stat installed, or you can upgrade to the newer water pump in which case you can replace just the T-Stat in whatever degree you want. I am sure someone will correct me if I am mistaken.
