If you have the original style water pump - the thermostat is sold as a part of the assembly (in the neck). When you purchase a new thermostat, it comes in the neck.

If you upgrade to a 2004+ water pump, then the thermostat is a separate unit.

Its original water pump but the thermo is a separate unit 160* that matches the one in the housing but I don't know how to remove it from the housing.

Just a sidenote about some aftermarket 160* stats. I bought one and soon noticed my car would reach 247* + sitting at stoplights. When I got on it under hard throttle it would sweep past 250* until I backed off and let it cool down.

I suspected the stat wouldn't open up enough to allow more coolant to flow. So I reinstalled my original 190* and the car never overheated again. Never wanted to retry another using that stat from that auto parts store. Maybe next year I'll try again with a different thermostat brand name.

Oh that 160* wasn't even 30 days old, but they did have a warranty!

160* T-stats are sold in those necks, as are 180* and 190*. Just because it is a 160* do not assume that it has been disassembled.

So if I am understanding blacksedan87 correctly, he is saying that if you have the older style water pump you cannot remove the T-Stat but must purchase the water pump/neck with the T-Stat installed, or you can upgrade to the newer water pump in which case you can replace just the T-Stat in whatever degree you want. I am sure someone will correct me if I am mistaken.

Or stop by Autozone and get a 160* stat with neck for $33.99 I just put one in my car last weekend and the car runs 172*-174* in 90+ temperature.
