I'm restoring a car that belonged to my Dad. Try to get some of the parts back if you don't buy your old car. The one I'm restoring was stored in a barn on my farm for 28 years and in the next month I'll have it completely restored and back on the road. I think about my Dad every day just like you. This restoration has been expensive but I think of it as a tribute to my Dad who taught me to love American cars. Good luck on what ever route you take.
Found one that almost sounds too good to be true! 2000 FRC, 97,000 miles, 6-speed, $13,500! Right car, right price, right location, it's even the right color (Pewter/Black leather, same as my mine)! Less miles and I might even come out on top. The one weird thing about it is that it has Z06 body upgrades (including Z06 fender badges), but is NOT a Z06. Thoughts?
If you buy it, Take something from your old car and put it on your new one, This way you will still have something to remind you of your dad when you are out driving!
If I had the time, I would completely do that. I suppose I could always buy something temporary to get to work with in the meantime, but I don't know, I just want things to go back to how they were 2 weeks ago. Impossible, I know, but still frustrating. I'm half tempted to buy it back just so I have an excuse to do something with the motor and drive train Not sure what, but I'm sure I could think of something.
Buy it back. Maybe you could find someone to part it out for you and pay a commission to them on what gets sold. You could save whatever you want then.......even if some of it hangs on the wall of your house or garage or basement. I still have some things on the wall that belonged to my deceased dad. Hell, you could always use the seats in your rec room....the seat where your dad sit. Good luck.

I have to agree with refusing it. When my '96 C4 was totalled in a rear end collision, the other driver's Ins. Co. (they were 100% at fault, which I'm assuming is your case too), lo balled me. Offered 6k. I refused it and did web searches for other like cars, gathered receipts for mods and other expenses I had paid for the car, and kept on the adjusters case. After about 5 weeks (time didn't bother me, they gave me a rental) they came up to 15.5K. (this is last year). Took the $, added a few bucks of my own and now have a nice '03 Z.
I would also check craigslist. There are some deals to be had there, but be prepared to do you due diligence. Inspect the vehicle(s) closely and definitely run the VIN if you have LEO buddy or someone who works for an insurance company. Carfax will sufice otherwise.
Ebay and autotrader seem to command a premium when it comes to autosales. CL requires more legwork and due diligence, but if you don't want to sink any more money into a new ride, but can afford to invest your time, maybe you should go that route.
Very reliable vette only dealer.... You'll find mostly low mileage C5's and C6's there. So, you may struggle to find one without throwing at least a couple grand more into the equation. Good luck.
Insurance co is offering you Kelly blue book. They usually won't account for mods. Like the others, hit them for more. Show them prices and or receipts of any mods. The insurance co will sometimes take that into the payout. I had to do a small battle on my 75 custom restore that a lady wanted the front end worse than I.
Was rear-ended by a careless driver a few weeks ago Everyone was OK, so I can't be too upset, but my 1999 FRC was just deemed a "total loss" - great . Apparently there was frame damage beyond repair. Haven't talked to the shop yet, so I'm just going on what the insurance company said. I'm left with 2 options.
1. Take the money and find another Vette! They're offering something like 15K. I briefly looked around a bit and saw some things in that range, but most were much higher. Is this a realistic number? What are my chances of finding a nice '99 - '00 - '01 FRC in that price range? Good? Bad? I honestly have no idea.
2. Buy mine back. For what seems like an insanely high price of $5000 I can buy it back! Why so high??? That would leave me with $10K to do with as I please. But I'm guessing I can't fix it for that price. Maybe the cosmetic stuff, but if the frame is toast, I'd basically be buying the drive train.
The worst part about it is that this was a very sentimental car. It belonged to my father who passed away few years ago. I thought about him every time I drove it, and just figured I'd always have it. Bummer. Any advice from the community on where to go from here would be really appreciated!!!
Thanks!
So think of it this way. What would YOU pay for your totaled car with 100K plus miles on it? This is an unfortunate situation and absolutely not your fault; having been hit from behind. Insurance companies are not required to replace your vehicle with a vehicle of like model and condition. With the rates we all have to pay it would be nice if the were but they are not. So they pay a rate determined by condition at time of loss.
See if you can work them up some on the value and then take your settlement and purchase another car that you like.
I would not take their first offer! Point out to them very strongly that you didn't claim any injury & by doing so you saved them a bunch of $$$. Good luck!
Friend.....Don't take this the wrong way, PLEASE get an attorney! You're being had.
...good advice.
Got rear-ended 1.5 yrs ago while driving my Silverado. Like you they offered me way less than the truck was worth and also used that bogus price to justify totalling it.
It was the dead of winter and I needed a 4wd and they kept jacking me around for the rental 4wd truck costs. One phone call and a followup letter from a very respected lawyer and I have my Silverado back (no salvage title) plus cash in my pocket...
Hey guys! First off, I love the idea about grabbing something from my Dad's Vette that I could install in the new one. I talked to the guys at the shop today and I don't think that will be a problem at all! I'll have to think of some ideas.
As far as the insurance (Progressive) offer goes, it sounds like there's a pretty wide range of opinions out there. Honestly, from the little bit of searching I did last night, I can say that I'm having a very hard time finding other C5's for sale with my kind of miles (112K). Makes it hard to compare or even gather listings to show to my insurance company.
I mentioned yesterday that I did find one that sounds perfect for $13,500. 2000 FRC, 97,000 miles. It's as close as I'll get to making this like it never even happened which would be awesome. If things work out, I may be driving down there tomorrow night to look at it. Any tips on buying a used C5 privately.
Take the insurance money and buy my 02 Pewter/black leather with 18,000 miles for $21.

Excellent condition, Bone stock and babied since I purchased September 200. 2nd owner garage kept. Services performed by one of the best GM mechanics there is, Steve Spence at Bryner Chvrolet. Services done under my ownership were oil changes, coolant & brake system flush, fuel injection system cleaned. Driver side tire repaired for a slow leak, balance, reset TPMS; Left & Right door interface modules and EBCM module were replaced under warranty. Still have until September for the GMC Extended warranty.
Even have the VHS tape and leather portfolio including the pen from when the car was new
Is there any particular reason you are actually seeking out higher miles (i.e. 90-100k+)? Just to match as closely to the mileage your car had? You shouldn't have a problem finding a 60k mile car for $15-17k.
