Does anyone on the forum know the allen wrench size for the transaxle fill and drain plugs. I don't have one big enough and not sure if its metric or standard. Car is in the air waiting to drain and fill and I need to buy some tools. Thanks in advance.
For the manual tranny on my '99 FRC I just use the end of the socket wrench without any sockets, fits perfectly. Now if I recall doing the rear diff does require a T attachment.

I did the tranny tonite and yes a 3/8" drive fits. The transaxle looks like an allen wrench. The 3/8" drive does not fit.
how often should it be changed? i got right at 23k on my car and was thinking of going all around and changing all of them. How hard is the m6 tranny change? and best fluids to use in tranny and rear
i also have a 2000, did you use synchromax? i would be interested in how it shifts now. i have only 50k on mine but i think it could shift better.
i have heard it is a messy job. how was it for you?
thanks
I could be wrong, but changing the rear end/diff fluid should not affect shifting (vs the tranny fluid).
Nevertheless, I've done both my tranny and rear end a few times and it was a very messy job trying to use those hand pumps that fit on top of the containers (they always seem to leak). Until I found this little gem at Autozone for about $10.

There are many threads on the subject, but in my '99 I used just the basic DexIII (per T.J. at RPM Transmissions) in my MN6 as the synthetic is not good for the paper blocker rings.
I had Mobil One synthetic gear oil at one point in my rear diff and was not happy (getting some "gear" noises). I switched to AmsOil Severe Gear and have been quiet since.
You'll find in your searches that this is a "controversial" subject matter as people's opinions differ and they are partial to what they think works best.

I took a short ride once the fluid was changed. So far I cannot say I feel any difference. I did not buy the car new so I cannot say for sure what kind of fluid was in the tranny. It looked like ATF.
The messy part was draining. When the drain plug comes out the fluid shoots pretty far. Do not put your drain pan directly under the drain but rather about six inches over and then move it back under the drain as the fluid flow slows down. To fill the tranny I used the pressurizing the bottle method. Took a 3 foot long piece of clear plastic tubing. Cut the bottle top so that the tubing was a tight fight and reaches the bottom of the bottle. I used a football inflating needle attached to my air compressor hose with the regulator set to a very low pressure. Run the tube up into the tranny, make a small hole near the top of the bottle for the needle to go in and then slowly pressurize the bottle and watch the fluid flow up into the tranny. Very very clean way to do it.
The transaxle has enough room that it is easy to just use the bottle and squeeze it in.
