Default HVAC Blower issue - Redux

Ok, here's the original thread back in Feb.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ac-blower.html

Bill Curlee helped me diagnose the issues.

To simplify:

'03 Z06, dual zone digital unit

1. Blower quit working in Feb., Feel cold air at all vents, just no fan. Removed blower, inspected, verified good on bench.

2. Power out of pigtail good. Fan runs when grounded. Suspected bad module. I'm too large to get to the sucker and remove it so decide to button it up and take it to a quality A/C guy.

3. Next start, blower works like a champ. Until yesterday .

4. Reverify blower is good, power is there.

5. Use universal connection tester (small rubber mallet), reassemble. This time, no joy, she doesn't blow.

6. No Codes.

It's freaking summer in Fla. Hot, humid and torrential rain every afternoon. Need to fix SOON

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem, I tested the blower motor briefly (OK, it spins with 12v.) on the bench, no codes. Would not blow in car.

I desperation I had the dealer diagnose, he replaced the blower motor. OK for the last year. Apparently there was an intermittent open in the motor winding.

Maybe take it out again, power up on the bench for a longer period, and/or jumper from the power connector coming from the blower resistor to the blower and check voltage under motor load, running (if it runs).

Just noticed something else.

Ext temp read 88 deg. Disconected, then reconnected battery to see if that made any dif.
Still no blower, but Ext now reads 99 deg.

I would confirm power at connector to blower resistor and also at blower motor connector coming from blower resistor, under load with jumper as noted in my prior post.

If no power check HVAC controller.

I'm going to have to do that early in the am. It's hotter than Hades out there.

Ok, finally got out and removed pass seat and glove box to get a little more working room. Blower motor works fine on bench. Power at input to module, not at blower, have no way to check pcm signal from head unit. I can't get to the furthest forward/inboard screw for the module, I'm just too big and arthritic. So it's back to the original plan from 6 months ago to find a good local A/C shop.

The two front screws on the blower module do not come all the way out, just several turns. FSM says back them out 5mm or about 0.2". The two front holes are slotted, so the only screw (of the three) that has to come out is the rear one or the one you can easily see.

Yeah, got the rear one out, pass side loosened. Can't see or feel the DS screw. Pulled harnesses as far as they would go, just can't wriggle it out. I hate to bring it to someone. Built my own danged motor, can't change the module.

Is the carpet in the way? At this point with the seat out, the carpet is no problem to get out.

Getting the carpet back in with the console and finish panel in place is a little more work but I did it by using a thin sheet from a plastic bottle to guide the carpet edge under the console and trim panel without catching short of going all the way in under the two parts. Without the plastic sheet inserted first in the correct location, the carpet edge would hang up about 1" short of slipping all the way back up under the panel edges.

I assume you have unplugged the connector from the controller to the module for more room.

Yeah unplugged connector, carpet isn't in the way. Removed kick plate for more head/shoulder room. Got myself wrenced in there pretty good. Almost had to yell for help to get back out.

Got the bugger out! Wedged a screwdriver under the rear lip and gently pried it until it cleared the retaining tabs. Then wiggled it free. Now I can loosen the remaining forward screws so the new one will slide back in easy. The 1 rear screw will be enough to hold it together when tightened.

Only downer is nobody has it in stock, 5 day delivery.

My 2000 Buick has the same configuration as my (and your) Corvette. Before I figured it out about four years ago, I removed both front screws on the Buick module. I put it back with only one because of no room. It has been fine ever since with only one front screw.

You could try another GM dealer like Buick or Cadillac to see if they have it.

Yeah, I saw the part is common. Tried all the GM shops, they want $350 for it and will order it, about 3 days. Parts Taxi had the best delivery, in my hands Fri am at less than 1/2 the price.

Thanks!
