Im using a big compressor at my work because of all the other uses that its used for besides the paint booth but you could get a 30 gallon and would work fine
It all depends on how your going to paint. If you want to do the whole car in one shot your going to need a large compressor and a great filtration system.
If you are going to do what I did and panel paint, I did my car with a 200 psi 15 gallon dewalt oilless compressor and 2 devilbiss finishline 3 guns 1.3 tips. They did a great job and i have no complaints. For filtration all i did is use 3 home depot air water seperators attached to each other. Got the job done and the car came out fantastic. All of my paint came from tcp global.
it depends on what you are going to spray
High Build primer - may take a larger tip gun 1.8 plus....
Sealer or base coat - 1.3 to 1.4
Clear coat - 1.3 to 1.4
Check with the paint manufacturer as to gun set and requirements
Sata or Iwata can be 600 to 800.00
There are also good mid range guns in the 200 / 300
Deviliss just came out with a new gun - pretty nice
also depends if you are shooting solvent base or waterbase - base coats
compressor size - 20 gal min IMO
Chicago Pn make a nice compressor for 600.00
with a drier and filter.

I have the door panel, front bumper, and possibly aftermarket rear fenders (once I decide which ones to go with) so this is all good info.

I will be using high build primer so this is good to know. Just doing some research on some guns now...

Some good advice is just go to harbor freight or something and get you a cheap pot gun or a gravity feed gun (if you can find it) with a big tip 1.8+ like csherman said for primer. Look into doing epoxy primer as well, it is good stuff for some repairs. If it doesn't lay on just perfect because of a cheap gun, that's ok because you are going to block it anyway. This route will probably be cheaper than buying tip and needle sets for a good gun.
Spend your money on a good base/clear gun ..I still use an old Iwata W-400 conventional..Most everything you find nowdays is HVLP because of EPA regs. Mine requires a higher constant pressure, but I think it does a better job of atomizing material.
The one thing you need to focus on if you want good results is a good drying and filtration system. The smaller the aircompressor and the longer it runs, the more moisture will be created within the system. You can paint cars fine with a 25-30 gallon tank compressor, just expect it to run alot. It's good to have a psi guage at the inlet of your gun so you can monitor pressure. If it drops, wait a few minutes and continue. When you plumb out of the air compressor, build a trap. Basically a tall 2-3' upside down U out of iron pipe or good solid PVC. the water will have difficulty traveling up it, and you can put your dryer / filter behind it, air hose to the gun out of that. I don't recomend using PVC though, it isn't really good for air pressure and you don't want that blowing apart right when you need it to work. If you don't need 100' of air hose, don't use it. Buy just enough length for what you need, it will make the whole system more efficient. The friction loss on long air hoses is rediculous and unecessary.
I have a sata and my back up is a finex 3000....the finex sprays super nice and only around 130 bucks ....great gun for the price...get a motor guard filter...the filter looks ike a roll of toilet paper... it fiters down to 0.1 micron and they run around 100 bucks.
