The only difference between the 04 and the earlier versions of the Z are the shocks. The shocks were changed in 04, the change was subtle, but it did improve the handling of the car. If you wanted to upgrade an earlier Z to that standard all you have to do is change the shocks.
BTW Bilstein sport shocks have the same damping curves on the front shocks and almost the same in the rear. They cost a lot less than the stock 04Z shocks and last a lot longer.
