Default My C5 dragstrip night

This was my first time ever at the track as a driver so be easy on me, I had no one to coach me on reaction times. But a dragstrip Guru did help me out with my dial in time suggestion.

Completely stock (as far as I know) on the OE but rebuilt and now at 22K mile LS1. Only difference in the car is the Michellin Pilot Sport AS tires so I guess it is not "completely" stock. My daily driver

1/8 mile track

Dialed in at 9.10 , got to Semi finals and Brokeout at 8.95, happy to lose by besting my time by .15

I beat the Built LT Firebird but lost by being too fast

I have the fever, but the track was so far away I will have to get a trailer and tow vehicle before I can do this regularly

I cant wait to go watch the U.S. Nationals next weekend

Remember, go easy on me it was my Rookie run track experience. For some reason the track time on tickets was 3 hours behind, last run was actually at a much cooler 10:45 PM

My step son went with his 1995 240 SX with SR20 DET swap, also and his friend had his Fox body Stang too.

We had a Blast, especially for an only $10.00 trophy class entrance fee

Practice rounds

First two rounds

Semi Final - BREAKOUT

Congrats! I'm 64 and will be getting my first Corvette soon. I am curious about track time. Was just out in California and got to watch up close some "Club racing" on Laguna Seca Speedway. Sure wanted to get out there!!

Be careful, it's an addiction. A long long time ago I used to drive my buddies ASA 69 427 Camaro. This was before the delay boxes and trans brakes. All you had was your feet and the linelock. Recently I've run my TR8 but being a 5spd on street tires, it isn't very consistant.

I've also done track days at the local road course with both Brit cars. To me that is much more fun but does have the potential for going off and damaging something. Bigest turnoff for me at the drags is the waiting around. Last test & tune it was standing around all day for two 13 second runs.

I'm still looking to buy my first Vett. I was all set for a Vert but I wouldn't be able to do a track day without a rollbar. I don't think I'd want to get into that. So I keep thinking back & forth between a Vert or a FRC. Decissions

Be careful, That is a sickness that's very hard to overcome. I did some racing in the late 60s and quit because of the $$$ it took to raise a family ect. 10 years ago my son-in-law and I took my 87 GTA to the track to run in the street car class a couple times. That winter I built a track only car, and have been at it ever since. Last winter I sold my 92 Grand am tube chassis car and bought my vette. My son still has a 96 back half bird that we run 1 or 2 times a month that I fund. I'm not driving any more but sure miss it. It WILL get exspencive. Tip- leave when you see the last yellow flash on. My son had a reaction time a couple weeks ago, .00091, and usally has in the .01 or .02 times. Good luck and have fun. We do.

I'm leaning more towards autocross or road racing. I watch 'Pass Time' and I don't know if I'd want to take the heat I would get because I won't do a full on launch.

Never ran 1/8 mi before but lots of 1/4mi with motorcycles though. It really is addicting, good for you. Get that reaction time down and you will be in that winners circle very often.

If you guys want to learn, there's a Drag Racing section here on CF.

A lot of good info posted there.

Thanks for all the suggestions

I left on the second yellow light, right before the third light came on, on the last run and got a .6558 reaction which is only .1558 off the .5000 perfect reaction time and much better than the 1.### + I was getting, so hopefully I am getting better. I am glad my C5 has the performance rear differential

I have been going to the 5 day weekends of the U.S. Nationals at the former Indianapolis Raceway Park, Oreilly Raceway park , or now Lucas Oil Raceway (whatever you want to call it) for the last 15 years ( off and on for 15 years) and I know about how addicting it is........... I leave wanting to drag race every time

Also learned there is not a lot of room for a helmet in these cars, wow I had to scoot the seat up to clear my halo or removable top frame or something.

Now I definately need a bigger tow vehicle and a trailer, although I could probably use my 99 Blazer and just get a trailer, and then maybe a Z06 or FRC track car too

Like I said, I have the fever/sickness that is drag racing in my veins.

Anybody use the C5 Magnesium wheels for Drag racing?

I used to go to the US nationals every year too, till 83. My wife of only a couple a years caught me standing on the gaurd rail trying to get a look at some gal strutting her stuff down by the track. She said if I would take a chance of killing my self [if I would have fallen] just to see some girls ***** then we weren't ever going there again. She has never been to a national event since. Used to go to St. Louis to the craftmans nationals till I started myself. Gateway is closed now, and don't know if or when it will reopen. Lots of tracks are in trouble, with this economy, we only have abot 1/2 the cars we used to have. I'd pick up a set of wagon wheels to put some radials on. I keep forgetting that most tracks are still using a .500 tree. We run a .0000 tree

Sounds like you had a really fun day. The more you go to the track, the more you learn.

After getting the bug, most people build a dedicated drag strip car. That way you don't keep breaking your daily driver. You always want to go a little quicker. Before you know it, "1/4 mile", you will go from the 13's, 12's, 11's, 10's and if you want to spend the money you could get into the 9's. The most fun group is the 12's to the 14's, less money and parts breakage. I am now in the very low 10's and just bought more go fast parts to break into the 9's. My friend who is in the 8's wants to spend more money to get into the 7's. It is a never ending quest.

I see your reaction times are better than I thought as I never ran a .500 tree either.
