Default Brake Pads

What’s the consensus on the best replacement brake pads? Would like to see less brake dust and quieter stopping without compromising brake performance. Thanks in advance.

I ran Hawk HPS pads on my '00 - they seemed to do a good job with no squeal and little dusting.

Can't give you "the consensus" but can offer one person's experience. I remember having the factory pads on the fronts and I was astounded by the amount of brake dust observed after little driving. I then went to Hawk Street pads. I have had them for a few years now and I am very pleased... no brake dust and they have shown to be long lasting.

They stop better than ZO6 pads and dust less than standard C5 pads.

BTW, ET hates Ceramic pads. I tried GM's Ceramic Pads, they warped my stock rotors and stop poorly (you must use high pedal force) and will fade with repeated hard use.

I won't say it as eloquently as ET... But u basically have two choices.

High ceramic content pads = no dust, pretty wheels all the time and pi$$ poor performance

Soft compound pads = lots of dust and a brake pedal that works.

Personally I like hawk hps or stock pads for street driving. But then I'd much prefer just dusting off the wheels b4 picking up a girl for dinner over picking hers and my teeth out of the door panel of the car that I tboned when the jacka$$ driver ran a red light and I couldn't stop in time. Just my personal preference tho...

Did you try searching on this? You could literally read for days on this topic... Try this: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=site%3Aforums.c...2brake+pads%22

Whatever you get be sure to bed them in properly. Gl

I'm new to the general discusion section didn't realize this was so common. Just bought an 04 Z06 and on the 20 mile drive home the front wheels were covered in brake dust. As stated in a previous reply I'd rather have dusty wheels and be able to stop well as oposed to the alternative. Thanks for all the advise.

Hawk HPS seems to be the most popular around here. I run them on my C5 and have sold a ton to forum members. I've never had a complaint. They perform great for street driven cars.

I've been running a set of Performance Friction's Z-Rated pads for the last 70k miles. They're ultra quiet, don't give off too much dust, and they've lasted me quite a long time. I'm just now getting ready to put a new set on.

I love these pads! Some people have complained about poor cold performance, but I'm not one of them. The pad's full braking power comes in once they've heated up, and one really good hard step on the brakes seems to bring them up to temp. The stopping power of this pad puts a smile on my face. I'll admit that it takes some getting used to...so keep that in mind if you consider these pads for your car. If you'd rather not have to worry about heating the pad up, then this may be one to pass on.

As to the life of the pad - 70,000mi seems pretty darn good to me. I don't take the car to the track, but my normal driving habits could be called quite spirited. But then again I'm also pretty easy on them when I'm in traffic or putting around town; I don't rush to a stop sign and jam on the brake pedal at the last second.

My only problem with the pads is that it seems hard to find a distributor (and one with a good price, at that). I suppose they're not as popular a pad - but that's a real shame. I highly recommend giving them a shot.

I ended up getting Hawk HPS pads from a forum vendor. I’ve only put about a hundred miles on them, but very happy with them all around. Thanks for the reply all the same.

We do this two to three times a week, every week. Is the "search" feature not working?

How do they "stop better" than stock pads?

This thread died a couple of weeks ago though. The last post before the one this morning was on 9/2... The OP probably has new pads by now.
