It is a feature on some cars that forces you to shift from 1st to 4th at a certain RPM range once the engine hits a certain temperature. If you let the RPMs climb before you try to shift, the skip shift (CAGS for Computer Aided Gear Selection) won't kick in. I believe it was GM's way of getting around the gas guzzler tax.
When I first bought my Z06, it didn't bother me too much. However, after a while the car forcing me to shift from 1st to 4th became a major PITA. Installing a ship shift eliminator was once of the best moves I've done with the car so far.

Thanks for all the replies! I was in the midst of our first 2200 mile road trip and the grandson was asking if the car was fast, so we had to see. The trip went perfectly and the NCM & Tail of The Dragon were epic!
When I first drove a vette, I said to myself, I can live with the skip shift feature.... then I drove in crawling traffic. Ordered the eliminator next day, never looked back!!

I wind my engine out to where I never notice the CAGS feature, save for the rare left turn when I have to keep an unusual speed and my gear selection is restricted to only fourth getting out of the hole. I suppose because I grew up driving low power English sports cars, I don't use the available torque well, preferring to run higher into the power band before shifting.
I heard all about this shift skip as I researched my 1st purchase, even ordered the bypass. Now after I've had it a month (2003 anniversary addition,) I don't think I'll even bother to take the time to put it on. I rarely ever hit the 1-4 skip. Only when in a low speed downtown or residential area if I'm REALLY conservative taking off from a light or stop sign. Mine will allow me to go into 3rd tho, will most not allow 3rd?

So are you saying that you pull away gently from a stop in first gear then shift directly into third gear?
FWIW, my friend has a Camaro that shares this feature and both of us discovered that shifting from first to neutral (allowing the shifter box spring to center the shifter) allows you to shift to second at will, essentially bypassing the CAGS.
That being said, like many on this forum, I eliminated this feature after driving mine the very first day
Yes, anytime I feel that block on 2nd I just go to 3rd instead of 4th. I have noticed that if you just pause in neutral for a second you can do what you want, which again in that kind of a low speed situation isn't a big deal either. I so rarely encounter it, even in slower downtown areas. If I see the light come on, I'll usually just stay in 1st for a little more....or go straight to 3rd.

I have the skip shift tuned out but when not in a hurry I always shift 1-3-5. Doesn't lug the engine and saves me a few shifts.
To each his own.... The joy of driving manual for me doesn't come from merely pressing a pedal and moving a lever. It comes in picking the right gear for the situation, winding out lower gears for max acceleration, etc. If I get up to cruising speed after 3rd or 4th gear, it doesn't do much for me to pass through all of the rest.
