So I have a vibration in my car that developes around 73mph. Its not a tire out of balance because its not constant. It slowly fades in vibrates for 3-5sec then slowely fades out. Vibrating stops for 3-5 seconds then slowely begins to fade back in to the vibration? Any thoughts?
Well a number of folks have experienced this or something similar. Seems to be the solutions have been all over the place. One of the most popular I've read about is bad tie rods in the rear. Jack up your car and see if the tire/wheel can be wiggled back and forth. If so, that is your problem. I've also heard of wheel bearings, out of round or bent wheels (can have these checked on a hunter machine), calipers warped etc as being culprits.
I have the same vibration issue which for some reason started recently. The vibration intensity varies quite a bit and is most apparent from 63 - 73 mph (above or below - much less apparent and gone below 60 mph) and really is more of a shake of the entire car than a vibration. I know for sure it is related to wheel speed. Not the trans or engine - by evaluating in different gears, neutral and clutch in or out -still vibrates. I do not believe it is tire/wheel imbalance.
So I lifted the rear end last weekend and sure enough the driver side rear tie rod had quite abit of wear. It really helped to see it when I had someone else wiggle the tire and I could watch for the motion. When I was doing the tire wiggle - it was for some reason hard to convince myself it was loose. Have not replaced the tie-rod yet - but believe it is my issue. The passenger also is slightly loose - so i will replace both and hope for the best.
Wheel bearings make more of an audible noise starting around 50mph and get worse with increasing speed.
