Default weird 6 speed trans issue

I need some help solving this issue on what this could be. All of a sudden it is very difficult to get the car into first gear. If I put the shifter into neutral and move it to the left and attempt to put it into first it will go into third instead. There is no grinding or anything like that. The car will go into first but you have to put a little effort and pull the shifter to the left then forward to go into first but nothing like it should be.

About 2 months ago i had a C6 shifter and box installed and I must say it feels sloppy. After the install getting the car into reverse sometimes is a pain. The stock shifter just felt firmer but with a longer throw. Is there any adjustment needed when installing a different shifter? I contacted my installer about the issue and without him looking at it he said its quite possible that the first gear synchro is shot. Wouldn't it grind if the synchro is shot?

Suggestions?

your problem is most probably the shifter itself or alignment. was it a new or used shifter? does your installer know how to install one of these shifters? i'm a little skeptical after the bad syncro comment. did your car have this problem before the shifter install?

thats what it feels like is a bad alignment. it feels as if the alignment for first shifted or something. i had no shifting issues before the c6 shifter install. i purchased the shifter off another forum member

You might want to first try re-aligning your shifter following these instructions:

sounds more like an alignment issue, the C6 shifter should be very similar in feel to the C5 except for the lenght of the throw

If your alignment pin is missing you can use a 5/8" drill bit... Just don't drop it...

but, i always thought it was proper to tighten the shift rod bolt before tightening the shifter mounting bolts. [?]

I can almost garuntee that the torx bolts that hold the shifter mechanism to the actuator rod have come loose... Same thing happened to my car after the shifter install. Follow the above links and do a re-alignment, and you will solve the problem!

Do you actually use a torque wrench to tighten the 3 torx bolts down to 22 lbs? I priced torque wrenches tonight and they are 70 dollars and up. I assume that many people just tighten by hand/feel.

I hand tightened them, and used blue loctite

You can probably get away without one for this job... But if you do a lot of your own work a torque wrench is one of those must-have tools... They have some good deals on amazon.
