Default why this car?

so still doing some research on c5's, but i have a question.

i get the frc (fixed roof coup) and what it is, i get the targa top, and what it is, and the same with the convertible.

why have i read some post, saying 'i am still getting used to a targa top after so many years in a frc'?
is there really that big a difference in the handling, ride, and noise between them all?
i have had convertibles before and understand they ride a little different with the tops down, but what about the other two?

and while i am at it, how much different is the convertible with the top down compared to up?
the convertible i had was from 1972.

thanks in advance.

I had a 69' Roadster before my current C5 Roadster-NIGHT AND DAY difference. The C5 is better in everyway, and VERY QUIET with the top up-not all squeky/rattley like the C3.

The C5 was designed to have a convertable option right from the beginning (even though they did not offer one the 1st year of production). Drive one and you'll see.

GM is doing their best to build a sportscar to fit the needs of the many different kinds of drivers we have in the world. Here's a readers digest on each:
FRC : Or Z06 C5, this is the rally track performance C5 of the group, faster, more power in the motor, lighter (not by much), very solid frame, weekend racer. Ride is great but you don't get that openness feel in this, but it was design for folks who want to track their vette on weekends. You want to race a vette, get this model.
Targa Top : Your standard C5, removal targa top, overall a great all around sportscar, the best of both worlds, semi convertable, solid frame, good performance overall. I think the best looking vette around, solid performer, sporty but able to open the top, no real flex that I've noticed, great driving on twisty roads with the top off vette around. Nothing like it, I love this model and wouldn't trade it in for anything.
Convertable : More for comfort, great performance, good frame, more for driving in the open roads, a get a way sportscar (some flex in frame but still not that bad). This is for one who really likes that open feeling, I like the looks second to the coupe. You never really see these vettes on the track, you do the math, frame flexes too much I guess..

Enjoy which ever you pick, there all great vehicles..

With a convertible there is no difference in the handling or the stiffness whether the top is up or down. The only difference you'll feel with a vert is when the top is down and that incredible open air feeling you get while cruising. IMO no car looks better or feels better as a C5 convertible with the top down. But thats just my opinion. Good luck!

I guess that is why I have a Z06. I prefer the looks of the FRC to the coupe. WAIT!!! I DO have 2 Corvettes. A 2002 Z06 and a 1992 coupe. The C4 coupe style, IMHO, is great. The side profile cannot be beat.

absolutely nothing like it and with the padded top it's way better insulated for both noise and heat/cold

You do not see Convertables on the track since rules will require them to have a rollbar, not because of the frame flexing.

I love my Targa top. I always thought the long sloped glass in the back gave the car a VERY sleek profile. I swapped out the suspension with C6Z components, switched over to the lighter Z06 exhaust, added a cold air intake and beefed up my brakes. Now it works very well on the track, but ALSO can be a blast buzzing down Lake Shore Drive with the top down
