so as im on my way to the pavilions to get some runs in, my car starts to sputter and miss real bad. It ends up stalling, several times. I pull off the side of the street. Car istantly gets towed to antivenoms house. he pulled the valve cover the other day and saw that the cyclinder 5 valve spring broke...
yesterday ordered some lunati dual gold valve springs rated to .660 lift, so i have that out of the way for a cam swap....
Lucky you got pulled off the road in a timely manner...What tool did you use besides a spring compressor to swap the springs without pulling the head? I have been told this can be done but haven't got info from anyone who has done it... Thanks
Papas02C5, it's pretty easy but you have to have a special fitting that hooks to your air compressor, then screws into the spark plug hole. It pressures up the cylinder, holding the valve in the closed position, while you CAREFULLY remove the old spring and replace with the new. pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I have used this method to replace all valve springs without pulling the heads.

Done that before too.
To the OP - glad no other damage was done to the car.
It is a big pain in the azz but if you play you also break stuff also....
personally, i left enough parts on the tracks back when i was young, i have no desire to continue to do it now that i am much older and get my kicks in other ways. no disrespect to those that still choose to race, it's just not for me any longer. i'd rather spend the money i would have keeping my car running, on mods that please me and other things.
Maybe i'm just lucky, or maybe it just my clean living and only having pure thoughts...NOT!! I'm 60, grew up hot rodding, raced 1/4 mile for years, then I restored an older 911 Porsche and raced auto-cross for about four years and I never broke anything. i replaced lots of parts on the '55 Chev that i raced 1/4 mile, but not due to breakage.
The Porsche is an amazing car. I drove it like a wild man, it just runs and runs. Except for brake pads and tires, and valve adjustments, it never needed anything. I'm tempted to try my C5 in autocross. It's tons of fun.

Yep this works, so does taking out a plug and stuffing the cylinder with soft marine type rope and turning the engine over by hand to tighten it up, change the valve spring, back off the cylinder, pull out the rope, works every time!

Thanks for that info. I am going to install 1.8 rollers and new springs this winter but really didn't want to remove the heads. I guess my air compressor will be my new favorite tool....
