Default Oil Sender Woes?

Hi All,

Have been searchin' and readin' - I think I have diagnosed my problem, but want to check and be sure I don't screw up my car, or underestimate the issues. Here's the deal: around a week ago, my oil pressure gauge pegged at 80. Just sat there and I didn't worry too much. On the way home from sitting a few days at the airport last night, it started bouncing from 80 to 0, and back. Started getting "Service Vehicle Soon" warnings, "Check Gauges," etc. Got the thing home - seemed to be running just fine besides all the warnings. There are no issues at idle, and when I turn the ignition on, but DON'T start the car, the gauge goes up to maybe 60. I don't think it should.

My assessment from the reading I have done is that this is likely a bad oil sender. Your assessment? If so, can I drive the car (to go get new tires and a replacement oil sender?)

Appreciate views - thanks all!

You've kind of answered your own question -

There are no issues at idle, and when I turn the ignition on, but DON'T start the car, the gauge goes up to maybe 60. I don't think it should.
If you think about it - how could the car have oil pressure if the engine isn't running? I'm not trying to talk down to you or sound like an A$$.

The car is clearing demonstrating classic symptoms of oil pressure sender failure. Another symptom is if the oil pressure reads 130 psi on your "Driver Information Center" - aka DIC.

Drive the car, get tires and either get the sending unit replaced or do it yourself.

Sounds like an oil sender to me. I recently had an oil issue and it was diagnosed as the sender. Oil was actually leaking from the sender under cooler temps until it would warm up. The first time I had ever seen an oil pressure sending unit failure that didn't result in a spiked gauge.

Oil Sender senor is dirt cheap..

Mine did the same thing, I made a sender relocation kit for mine just in case it does it again, It is now in a location where I can change it in 3 mins if needed...lol, It is tucked away under the drivers side FRC.

I did the DPE relocation kit with optional mechanical gauge so that anytime in the future I will know w/o a doubt what the trouble is. A little more costly than I would have liked, but I figured it to be a one time deal. No trouble since installed

Someone posted a video of how to change the sender without all the fuss of removing the manifold or cutting a hole. When I did mine I thought it could be done that way, but most of my tools were at work.
