Second post down. If your 04 was made after January of 2004 then the recall service was done at the factory. (VIN 45120863 and greater). What the factory did was basically the fuel shutoff reprogram. The did not add any special relays (GM K Harness). What has likely happened is when the battery went away it fried the Column Lock relay. That relay is in the passenger footwell to the left of the iP Fuse box and above the BCM (large silver box). CL relay can be recognised by the color of the 5 wires that go into the wiring base of the relay. 1 White, 1 Green, 1 Purple and 2 Orange. The relay looks like this:
Remove the relay head from the wiring base and go to your favorite parts store and get a replacement relay. (About $20 at most parts stores) Install the relay back in the wiring base. Clear all the error messages in the DIC (I prefer to disconnect the neg battery cable for at least 10 minutes)
You should be all set after reconnecting the battery neg cable although I would check to insure that the new battery is fully charged. Most batterys have been sitting on the shelf a while and were not fully charged by the manufacturer. New battery fully charged measured across the battery posts should measure 12.7 to 12.9 volts or more. If yours is closer to 12.5 volts, put it on a charger until the voltage is at least 12.7
Just finished replacing the battery with a Optima red top. Left it disconnected for about 20 minutes before installing the new battery. Put the new on in and no more code on the dash. Start up much faster as well. Old AC Delco battery had no green in the "eye". Hoping the message does not reappear.
hoping so since the recall was done at the factory. Drove around the sub-division for a few minutes today and it was fine. Might drive it to work tomorrow for a full test.
I just went through this about a month ago and I also had an original battery in a 2004 Z06. I replaced the battery and installed the CLB(as well as the skip shift bypass) that I had purchased 3 years earlier. So far, all is well and I am enjoying not fighting the skip-shift.
Yes that factory 1st to 4th gear at low rpm is BS.
Installing a skip-shift eliminator was the first thing I did.
