My Z06 arrived today by transport from the dealer I bought it from in Michigan. One thing that is driving me nuts is that the car shifts from 1st to 4th. What am I doing wrong? My 72 only has a 4 speed and that's the way I like it... 1 - 2 - 3- 4 ....
Have you not read your owners manual? If not do so or watch the video tape that came with the car. Your car is equipped with CAGS (Computer Assisted Gear Selection). You must reach a certain rpm (2400) before it will allow you to shift into 2nd. If you dont reach 2400 rpm, it will force you to 4th gear. This was installed for EPA reasons. There are aftermarket products out there that will defeat this system (simple plug in) or you may buy a resister from Radio Shack.
I highly recommend that you read your manual and watch your tape before you drive your car. There are things in there that are very important to know before you operate your car.
Bring the RPM up higher in 1st and you will find 2-3. It's a system called CAGS. It allows the Corvette to pass the economy standards. It has to be disconnented in order to get 2-3 at lower RPM. The alternative to shifting froom 1st at a higher RPM is to disconnect the CAGS plug which runs to the transmission. If you do this, you will need to install a resistor or a aftermarket plug with a resistor installed to prevent the computer from setting an error code.
Please forgive me ... I've only driven the car about 10 miles home. I'll do the video tomorrow and figure out this beast ! Damn.... it was so simple way back then .... stand on it.... and have fun :)
Thanks for the help. But still .... ya gotta back 30 + years to know what it's all about! I can say that now, cuz I own both.
Hey man, enjoy the new ride! :D You will find all kinds of useful info here and
really, the ONLY stupid question here is one you're too stupid to ask.So... fire
away,it gives us all something to talk about. You are gonna love that car! :yesnod:
By a cags bypass and enjoy. My car was only home five minutes before the bypass was installed as like you I found cags too annoying to put up with especially in city traffic.
You can get around CAGS if you shift (1-2) at a little lower rpm (short shift first) or if you shift 1-2 at a little higher rpm. For about $20 you can install a defeat (takes about 1 minute) that eliminates the forced 1-4 shift. Enjoy!
