Default question about 12 volt wire?

I carry a small 12 volt air compressor on my motorcycle. I’m changing the large Auto type plug in to the smaller BMW Powerlet type.

My question is which wire coming out of the compressor is the hot wire – the one with writing on it or the one with the small ribs?

Thanks – tom

Did you already cut off the cigarette lighter adaptor?

Whichever one goes to the middle is positive, the one that touches the outsides is negative. There is no "hot" wire with a DC system.

thanks - it's a molded unit I'll have to take a hammer to it to get it apart - but i don't need to save it - I'm thinking i can plug it in & then use a prob to stick the wires to see which one goes to the center post -

Crack open the multi-meter and check continuity and polarity - Polarity with the plug inserted into the receptacle and continuity while unplugged.
