Curious if this can be installed on a car in which it was an option for that year, but not equipped from the factory.

I don't know how much use it would actually get, but I'm always jealous when I see someone elses car equipped with this option

Its controlled by the SCM so RPO changes would be needed as far as programming. But wiring would be the thing. Check for a blue 7-pin connector at the bottom of the seat going to the car.

Would be pretty easy to wire up if you did not wire it through the BCM.

Since it is always on, just like your seats, you could make your own harness and connect it to a hot wire like your cigarette lighter.

I assume that it would be powered by just a 12v source for the motor then?

My car does have memory option, and I'd love to have it linked to that feature, but I'd just be happy to have the steering wheel a little closer when driving.

To much work would need to be done and it's not really worth the effort. You would have to add a lot of wiring to make it function like stock.

A 12V power source is all you would need and a few wires.

thinking about this project more and more.

Is there a way to replace just the steering wheel portion without needing the entire steering column replaced?

If your wondering if you can convert non-telescoping column to one that telescopes without changing the entire assembly, the answer is no. The column itself is different and the drive motor and reduction gear assembly is attached to it down by the firewall. The motor uses a drive-cable to actuate the adjusting mechanism inside the upper portion of the column jacket.

I agree with Tony. As long as you didn't try to go through the BCM or seat memory module, it would be a lot simpler. Just wire the factory column switch through a latching relay so you can reverse the polarity to the motor. As far as I can tell, all the other electrical conectors (turn signals/lights, wipers, etc) would plug up just like you already have.

It is a handy feature at times if you try this, please document what you did to make it work. I have it on my car but would be interested in seeing how it could be made to work on a car that did not come with that option from the factory.

Actually, not to bad. Basically, pull out seat, knee bolster, and hide-away panel.

Disconnect battery, remove steering coupler bolts in engine compartment. Disconnect a bunch of plugs for the stalk. Mark the bottom for steering sensor and lock up steering wheel so it won't turn.

Pull out the steering column swap over your parts and bolt up.

Sure you knock it out on a saturday with no real effort.

Hmm, might give that a shot, but it will have to wait a couple weeks. Still working on getting the sound system components installed and those boxes are cluttering the garage already.

IN the meantime, what are you asking for your column? I'm curious why you removed it. Do all the electronics work (telescoping motor, multifunction switch etc)

Does the powered version allow the wheel to move closer to the front of the car than the non-powered version?

Yes everything works and I'll supply you schematic on how to wire it.

I parted out the car. 2001 coupe <20K miles. The cover need to replace over the steering column as I dropped something and it cracked the case. $375 + shipping.
