Default 2001 Exhaust Question

Question for you guys on my 01. I am perfectly happy with the level of performance the car offers in stock form, in fact i think it is pretty fast, WOW, i know.

One thing i would like to change though is to make it sound a little louder, and meaner at idle especially.

Here are my problems though, i really like the stock ti cat back system, and would rather not get rid of it. My car only has 23k miles, is all stock, and i would like to stay close to stock.

Headers i think would help, but they are expensive, and a big step for someone not wanting to go far from stock, maybe in the future though.

Here is the real question though, what can be done between the two? Would it be passible to get rid of all FOUR cats, put some type of a nice crossover pipe in with TWO low restriction cats?

Like a x pipe some talk about?

Do you need a tune to get around having two less cats?

Would this change make any difference in sound, or hp?

In 2002 they got rid of the "pup" cats and just went with two larger cats. I like the sound of my stock 2002 exhaust system, will probably never change it.

Not sure if the 2001 has the "H" pipe or not, but I don't think it really does much because it has a small hole between the two exhaust pipes. Just putting a real wide open X pipe in place of the H pipe might make it sound better. I'd start with that and see what happens ... it's cheap and easy to install an X pipe.

Thanks for the reply, few more questions though.

Do these x pipes eliminate the pup cats?

Are there o2 sensors that go to them?

If so, can they be tuned out?

The X pipe is way down stream of the cats and O2 sensors. Not sure if the pup cats have any O2 sensors associated with them ... the O2 sensors could just be before and after the main cats on the 2001.

I wouldn't recommend removing any O2 sensors from the system, as they are used during closed-loop cruise to give you optimum air/fuel mix for max mileage.
