Default First gear grind

I've got an 02 z06 with 80ishk on it now but the problem has been going on for a while. I basically cannot downshift to first while the car is rolling and I can't go directly into first from neutral at a stop. It might make it in at a stop but the grinding will tell you to stop trying pretty quick. I have been dealing with this by either coming to a full stop with the car in gear and clutch in and then shifting to first or when at a stop with the clutch out I will put the clutch in, shift to fourth and then shift to first. Either of these methods work perfectly smooth. The problem just came out of the blue one day, all other gears work fine, reverse is easy.

Obviously sounds like a first gear synchro problem....But perhaps maybe there is a bad bearing in the driveline that lets things spin too freely. I would think the synchros should handle that though. All the synchro has to do at a stop is stop the input shaft (plus torque tube etc.).

I have searched this topic a bit and there are definitely some other occurrences but I'd like to get a feel of how many have had this problem or if anybody feels like you should shift to first in this manner. The rear tranny is kind of a special case, does it require special care?

Anybody with these problems get them resolved? Any advice?

I realize I am digging up an old thread, but did you ever discover what the problem/resolution was?
