First take a small straight blade screw driver and pop the top cap off the shifter. Once that is removed you will see a (what is referred to as a key) wedge shaped metal piece. This need to be removed and then the **** will unscrew. I had to grab it with a set of vice grips and than use a hammer to tap the vice grips to get the key to release. It only took a few minutes once I got the vice grips to lock on . I believe I sprayed a little WD40 on it prior to starting.
The vice grips and sharp hammer tap approach is the one that works best.
While pulling up on the vice grips and wiggling the grips front to back ( like a dentist trying to pull a tooth, give a sharp rap to the passenger side of the grip and the demon key will pop right out.
kinda off topic but I found that you can reuse the stock **** on an MGW shifter if you dig out some of the insides after the key is out (you will not be able to reuse the key again on the **** if you go back to stock.)
then thread down the **** on the MGW shaft and use a thin lock nut to align it- and the top cap with the shift pattern can be reinserted- looks stock but is much shorter and better IMO.
