Just like the title states, how much would it run for a synchro repair? My 4th gear synchro is on it's way out, and I'm just curious how expensive of a job that is to get repaired? Also, is it wise to have anything else changed/upgraded when the tranny is open for the repair? Would it save some $ in the future to have a new clutch put in too when the transmission is out?
I can't give you a figure but my commiseration... My first synchro is pretty bad and I have a problem with 2nd too. My strategy is to drive as long as I can before it becomes totally undriveable because when consideration is given to all the labor to take the tranny out, you might as well put a good clutch in. I will probably go with an ACT double disk.
Won't just be synchros. Usually there are other issues. At a minimum the bearings will need replaced. Just taking it to stock coud be 2500.
Definitely look at the clutch. Put one in that will meet your future needs. Add a remote bleeder as well. Replace your clutch master and slave too. Check your torque tube couplers and bearings and your pilot bearing as well.
Two critical components on the reinstall,
Alignment and clutch air gap

Good luck
So if rebuilding some key components is going to cost $2k+, wouldn't it make sense to simply get a brand new Level IV RPM trans for $2k? Or am I missing something?

Yes, You would be way better off to get a new Trans from RPM as they are masters at their craft, also a C6Z clutch while you are in there. It will come with a warranty, and be better built than stock. I even know a very good shop in your area that can perform the work! Let me know if I can help you out in any way or if you have more questions! I would Love to help out a local forum member
Also that setup will help you greatly if you were to go FI in the future!

You are just itching to help me spend my money, aren't you, Brian?! It's fine for the time being, as it only does it when it's really cold, and I am able to avoid 4th gear when I need to. Just seeing what I'm in for in the foreseeable future if it continues to get worse and/or craps out in the next couple of years. I'd rather put it off till 100k miles (give or take) at which point I can get an LS7 clutch as well.
