Ok,
So the few times that I have posted here, you guys have been the best, so for that thank you...

Having said that, my Vette was wrecked last weekend, (never let your nephew drive you pride and joy), and I was just told by the dealership that they are going to recommend a "total loss".

As it saddens me to know that I will no longer be viable member of the community, I keep coming up with bupkiss in how to eliminate my nephew without alienating myself from the rest of the family.

I'm being told that I could buy the car back from the insurance company at about 2,500 dollars, but I don't know if that would be a smart thing to do, since it would take me years to get it back into any driving condition, and it would still hold a Salvaged Title.

But then again, I keep thinking that since it was only the front right side, (if you want I will post a picture or two), and that leaves a bunch of parts available to help others out with, (at a nominal fee I'm sure), so I'm not really sure what the best fiscal path would be to take.

This was my dream car, my first Z06, and now probably the last one I'll ever own, so I'm struggling with letting it go.

Thoughts anyone?

Rich

Why will it be the last one you will ever own?

Take the insurance money. Buy it back and part it out to recoup your loss, and then buy another.

And just forget the nephew. A person is worth more than the car.

Didn't you have it insured? The insurance company will certainly give you enough money to buy another one.

Your nephew crashed it on purpose?
Stuff happens!
Get the insurance money and buy another. Parting ways with family over an accident is crazy, in my opinion.

You sure you spelled bupkes correctly??

Get as much as you can and buy another. You don't have to go new. There's lots of C5Z's out there to make you whole again!!

Your last Z, Why is that? Take the money the insurance gives you and buy another and move on.

Think of it this way; if you owe money on it, it will be one bill less you have to pay each month. Other than that I would be pissed for a while, but it's family, and it's you fault for having let a "kid" drive a 6 speed demon. It's like giving a 5yr old a gun. They don't know how dangerous they are untill it slips.

Take the insurance money, buy a replacement and learn your lesson. Keeping the wrecked car around will only make closure more difficult, regardless of how much you make selling parts.

Accidents happen. Family is family, and a car is an inanimate, replaceable object. Buy a new car with the insurance money and move on. I don't know your specific situation and relationship with your family, but "eliminating" your nephew because he wrecked your car makes you look like the immature and foolish one... JMO.

As far as buying the car back goes, there is definitely money to be made, and there are plenty of people looking for parts. It just all boils down to how much time and effort you would be able to spend breaking down parts and shipping them out to buyers, or if that would just be a burden for you.

I agree with all the above - just take the insurance money and buy another Vette. A different C5 is not only available out there, but there are some really good buys to be found.

If you buy the car back from the insurance company, are you sure it will be issued a Salvage title?

My son got his car side swiped a few years ago. The car was older with a lot of cosmetic body damage so the insurance company of the other driver totalled the car. He bought the car back and kept driving it. He never exchanged titles, keeping the original. Maybe you too will get to keep your original title.

Cars that are totalled but don't carry a salvage title, get sold on ebay for 2 to 3 times more than $2500.

Sorry to hear your story. I don't let anyone else drive my Corvette as I know the temptation to test it is too hard to resist. The highest risk are the youngins.

Did I miss the part where the nephew has some responsibility in this and is going to make it right? Family is family - yes. But where does he step up and take responsibility for wrecking his uncle's car?

I agree with the others.....use the insurance settlement to purchase another car, there are a lot of them out there for sale, and likely for less than you paid for your car originally. The car was insured right?

First off, I was kidding about the nephew violence...I love the kid and my first question was "are you ok?"

According to NC law, I would be issued a salvage title...something about the insurance company would title it salvaged then sell it to me with that title...but a couple of people have brought up a good point...I don't have the will or time to sell the parts, so why bother...

I should get close to retail for the car...less than 20G worth of miles and in mint condition and supposedly that is factored in when they call around to price the car...but as was said...they are cheaper now days, so I won't get as much as I would like...I'll find out on Monday...

(as for inanimate, I beg to differ when you floored it and let the horses loose...)

Anyway, thanks for responding to my post...it has helped a ton...as for getting another one, well we shall see...I spent a lot of years in the desert to be able to afford the car, and since I didn't owe anything, I think I'll just take the cash and wait until I find the perfect deal again...

You guys are the best...

First, thank you for your service.

Been down this road before.
Years ago I bought back my 85 when it was wrecked. Took 6 months of scrounging for parts and a ton of money to put it back together.
Never will do that again!!
Check out the ZO6's for sale here in the "for sale section". Lots of great prices for very decent cars.
As the weeks pass you will come to realize you miss the Vette and the family you have joined.
