low oil level message
New to me 2000 coupe (I will be posting pictures), low oil level comes on. I check oil, add a quart, drive several miles. The message comes on again. Check oil, its full. message still coming on.
I've only driven about 20 miles since adding oil. Why the repeat in the warning?

the sensor is just a smallfloat on plastic and can stick easily have seen this after oil changes. also i think you might have to go through a couple drive cycles before system resets

It is a blue colored sensor on the back passenger side of the bat wing oil pan.
About $17 part. Easy to change when the Vette is in the air or on stands.
The other potential problem is broken or melted wiring to the sensor.

Took the Vette out after work to run some errands. No low oil level message. I guess it needed a few more cycles and a 24 hour rest.
Thanks for the help.

had some free time at work and looked up info on low oil message per GM SI doc #609457
conditions for clearing low engine oil level message start engine and allow to reach operating temp (194*f). turn off engine. ignition must remain off for minimum of
one hour. engine coolant temp should decrease -18*f. when you turn the ignition on the conditions for performing the test should be met and the low oil message clears.
Also this is interesting. conditions for illuminating the low engine oil level message
The pcm detects a low oil level condition for 3 ignition cycles. guess i am going to have to see what gm calls an ignition cycle now?
this is for a 2000 vette other years are prob. different

To all, thanks for the info. I just bought a 2000 convertible today after test driving the car last week with no issues, I take possession and get the low oil level message. Car is super clean with only 24000 miles, so I didn't panic. Checked dip stick and it looked maybe a quart low. Stopped and added a quart.,Started on my way home and it kept cycling on although the oil pressure looked normal. Now I understand the concept of "cycles", so hopefully I won't see it tomorrow.

Quick question: how low is the level when the warning shows up?
I seem to get the message about twice every oil change cycle. So I fill it up the appropriate amount. I suppose the proper question would be is that normal; adding about 2qts between oil changes.

No oil should be needed between changes if it isn't burning it or leaking it.

If you drive it hard, some years are prone to oil usage. I believe 99, 00, and 01 are especially known for it.
My 2000 has varied between using a little and a decent amount of oil. I've done 5 oil changes. Mobil One 3 times, Penzoil Platinum once, and Mobil One High Mileage once. And It's needed anywhere from 2 quarts over about 4-5k miles (PP), to the current fill (Mobil One) where I've only added .5 quarts and the oil life meter is already down to 40%. It seems to be using less but it's probably my driving habits. If I remember correctly, off throttle high rpm operation allows more oil to get past the rings. I check my oil at least once a month. I've never seen the low level lamp go on.

If I waited for the dic to tell me to change oil, it would be near 10,000 miles. Maybe the cars computer says it is OK but I couldn't wait that long. most of my miles are highway miles with a few miles of feeling the performance I bought it for. After 5000 when I changed, I was not close to having to add a quart.

Good Morning, and a "Happy Sunday" to all. My 1999 Coupe.
I just got my very first "Low Oil Level" message a couple of days ago.
But since I hadn't touched the oil since a year ago, when I did oil and filter the day before storing her, in Boston (November), and she spent 6 months stored, I guess we won't count that time.
Brought her out April 1st, as usual, and THE HELL RIDES began.
I could look back through slips and photos to count the mileage, but too lazy this morning.
Let's just say "Albany, Bangor, Long Island, Scranton, Brattleboro", to name a few.
Not to leave out Corvettes at Carlisle.
And finally in Sept., THE MOVE.
Drove her from Boston to Shelby, NC, and 'just because', on to Anderson, SC to visit a Corvette Nation buddy. Then he and I drove down to Georgia JUST BECAUSE.
Back up to Kings Mountain, NC, and a LOT of local driving.
With all that, she was down a half a quart (maybe a tiny bit more).
So, I'm happy with "OIL LOSS", considering all the HIGH SPEED TRAVELING I've done this past year.
Did the oil and filter yesterday and drove her around within a 50 mile circle, and no more message.
