Thanks to Plusit earlier thread on the subject I decided to do the same. I'm pleased with the way they've turned out so far. So I thought I would post some pics with a few details of how I did it.
With the recommendation of Lowcash I used fiberglass to fill in the voids on the rear of the cover. I believe it will be more flexible then the bondo.
I intended to use a orbital sander with 60 grit and sand of the ribs but the plastic is too hard for this so I followed Plusit and used a dermal with a drum sander bit to get it down to a point the sander was more effective.
With the ribs sanded off I spent some time hand sanding with 120 to 400 paper.
Several coats of plastic primer.
After many coats of colour this is the way they sit now.
All and all I'm very pleased with them and I've only got $80 into it. I would recommend going to a parts store that mixes automotive paint into a spray can to insure the right colour ( they don't go by Arctic White it's just GM white) found out the wrong way Not sure what to do with the lettering kind of like the simple one colour but think it will need to be painted a contrasting colour. All opinions on a colour are appreciated (except CHASLS2 )

They look great!!
What does the rest of your engine compartment look like? I would go with either red or black for the letters. Both of these would look good against the white, but I'm not sure if either fits your theme.

Very nice. I always thought about doing this and was surprised less people do. I'm either going to paint them or maybe carbon wrap? Not sure if that works with the heat.
Thanks Guys
It was worth the time to do this mod for me anyway but I could it go either way like BSM's. As for the letters I was thinking something different and understated like silver but because I don't know what direction I want to go under the hood I will most likely end up doing them red or black. Would also like to do some sort of graphic but again not sure what.cheers:

Looking at the pictures in your profile, it looks like your interior is black. I that is correct, I would make the letters black to match your interior when the top is down & the hood is up! Although I do like your idea of silver as well!!
Nice work!
How do you plan to do the letters? Paint them? Are there decals available to place in insert?
Do you know of any parts stores that put Arctic white in a spray can?
Thanks
Looks good Elvis. I just discovered there are decals available for the ribs, so I think I will go in that direction since I already like my red covers.

Looks great nice job. Just an FYI, I got my paint from automotive touch up and it matches perfect two times now and comes in the spray cans. http://automotivetouchup.com/ . Great project, nice
