I have a C5 with 6 speed standard shift. I never really liked the stock shifting mechanism so I bought a short throw shifter from a performance company in Nevada, the name of which escapes me now but they are very well known. It really wasn't much of an improvement. I often half to muscle it into first and when going to second unless I am very careful I go into fourth. Is this usual? Is there some adjustment I can make or am I just a lousy driver?
I keep hearing about some electronic adds on's to solve this.

Been driving standards for 38 years now.

i assume you know that when shifting at lower rpms there is a computer assisted gear selection mechanism that makes you shift into 4th gear. depending on how many miles are on the car, you may need to change the transmission fluid. i had 50k easy miles and my shifter was difficult and notchy. i changed to synthetic fluid and installed a bypass for the computer assisted gear selector. it shifts like butter now and into any gear i want any time.
Thank you all for all your help.
I will change the fluid this weekend. Mileage is around 75 K
The company I bought the shifter from is Summit.
I will look around for the electronic device as well. I had read about certain computer controls on the gear shifting but quite frankly I don't understand how the engineers thought shifting from 1rst to fourth at low RPM was an advantage or some sort of safety issue.

It was due to a federal mandate that the fleet had to meet minimum mpg standards, not safety. If you don't have it already, buy a CAGS bypass for around $20 and plug it into your transmission and you won't have to worry about the 1st to 4th forced shifting anymore. It only takes 5 minutes to install.
While you are under there put a washer under the plug for the shifter dent spring. It will reduce the amount of effort needed to move the shifter. It's called the anti-venom mod or something if you want to check on the forum for pictures. I have a Hurst shifter and it was a bear until I did this change. Now it's sweet. I used an old oil pan plug gasket (it's got to be a BIG washer).
