What do you use for extra security just in case the mount fails. I'd hate to lose a camera.

Depending on where I mount mine, I've found a soft cotton shoe lace tied off to something works great and should not mar the paint. I've never had mine come off, even at speeds over 100. I've also used the small wrist strap from a point and shoot camera, with the small end looped through the GoPro case where the hinge is. If you use the open back, you can feed some line through there as well. A friend who uses his on his jet ski uses fishing line, not sure what strength. He also has some kind of case that will float the camera should the line break!

Most reported failures to the mount happen where the three lugs mount to the case, so if possible tether to the case above the lugs.

Don't forget to share some footage!

Just curious, but if you tether the camera, isn't it going to be dangling on the side of the car likely causing a paint repair? Isn't it cheaper/easier to replace the camera than to blend the paint?
