I can certainly relate to your observations. I owned a C1 for two years, then a C2 for two months, then a C3 for 21 years.
Long story short - Hated the `84 when it came out, went on to own 2 C4's. Mildly disliked the rear of the C5 when it came out, now I think the C5 is one of the most beautiful Corvettes ever produced. Someone else used the term "flow", I think that one word best describes the C5. The C6 still has not grown on me yet, but the first photo I saw before the current Grand Sport was released certainly stirred some emotion.
I guess my admiration for Corvettes is not unique.........
Funny how that works, the back end is still a little big looking to me, but I definitely did not like the big butt of the C5 when it first came out. Especially didn't like the FRC/Z06 body style. Not that I hated the car mind you, just wasn't crazy in love with the styling. That stuck for a long time with me.
Of course now I drive a Z06 and feel it is less of a big butt, and more of a rocket with a cockpit stuck on the middle, lol.
I think with alot of new generations of cars you have people who decide they hate it partially because they can't afford the new one and are invested in the one they have. Saw it with the 3rd to 4th gen Fbodies, then the 1998 Fbody redesign, the new Mustangs, etc. I feel a lot of that happens w/ the C6, not that there aren't plenty who could buy one and just really do like the C5 styling better, but I'd wager there are quite a few who truth be told would love to have a C6 over their C5 yet claim to hate the C6 styling openly...
I've liked the C6 styling from day one (the rear exhaust facia cuts down on the big butt look IMO) and I absolutely love the widebody Grandsports and Zs. I definitely expect to own a C6 Z at some point.
Anyway, you're definitely not alone with warming up to the C5 and its big butt...
Almost all car designs somehow become dated and stale to me except for some classics that have a timeless refined sculptured flow to it's lines and I have yet to see a C5 from any angle that I don't like...this car was designed to perfection...... I just love it and sometimes I go out and just look at it for just pleasure of doing so....guess we are all a little crazy! C5 Crazy!
