Default 2001 VATS Key and Remote - Need Help

Hey guys. I've been in the C3 section for five years but just bought an '01 convertible that came with one VATS key and one #2 remote. I'd like to get a second key and remote. The prices for these at the dealership vs the Internet are quite different. If I buy from the net, will I be able to get them cut and programmed where they will work on my car? Will the dealership program and cut my new key if I don't buy it from them? Will they charge me the same regardless? See, lots of questions. I'd appreciate any experiences you've had with purchasing these other than from a Chevy dealership.

Thanks.

I just get my keys from the local smith shop. They have a selection of blanks with the vat values needed.

I bought extra keys and fobs on eBay for a good price and are GM. You will have to measure the ohms on the key you have on the pill.

As long as you get the right VATS key, a local locksmith should be able to cut it for you no problem.

I had the same deal except the remote I got did not work. The GM dealer that is a supporting vendor has the remotes at a good price. I got keys from the action site. All is well now. If you have an advanced scan tool it will tell you the resistance with the key in also.

So you can get the key for 14 shipped off ebay. Its the genuine gm fat head one. You can also get the skinny head for 7 shipped. The fobs are 25 shipped just specify what number you want #1 or 2. No program is needed its a diy through the dic. Dought home depot or lowes will cut it they will say its chipped dont try to correct them go to a locksmith should be about 3 to 5 bucks. I just did all this. I came in at about 52 bucks for a genuine gm fob and 2 keys and cut. Go see how much the dealer wants. If you dont have a ohm meter go to any gm dealer and go to service desk and ask them to read/check the resistance of your key its free. Then head to ebay
