Default Simple question...Car Ramps..

Dear Folks..Bought a C5-'01'...The original owner had taken this ZR1 engine to new heights...To basically a Z06...

...I just need a pair of good car ramps(A name to look for), to check the under carriage or to change oil...To do basic maintenance on this beauty...I'm checking the internet and others..But your help will speed the show up...Thanks a million..

Default Start by determining the approach angle....

Once you know the approach angle you can make an informed decision as to which ramps to purchase. If the raised end of the yardstick is at least 7.25" off the ground you can use the standard 56" or 67" Race Ramps. If the measurement is between 5" and 7.25" then our custom two-stage incline ramps will work for your application.

Race Ramps makes some very nice ones for the car. Not cheap, but certainly high quality.

Due to the location of the oil drain you cannot use just ramps to change the oil. Just FYI. Also need to jack up the rear end.

I use the large (wide) Rhino Ramps. They are inexpensive and sturdy. I lay a short 2 X 6 in front of them when I ride up so as not to bend the air dams. Good luck with your car!

Do the right thing for yourself....buy a set of RaceRamps. I used a set of the cheap-o's (rhyno ramps) and they were a pain in the a$$.
RaceRamps are light, strong and perfect for a lowered C-5.

Race ramps are an excellent ramp, but if you don't want to spend the money, build a set. As already mentioned to change the oil, you really need to have the rear of the car level with the front or even a little higher because the drain is located in the front of the pan.
I have my '01 on jack stands when ever I work under it. so my home made ramps are made to simply get the front end high enough to get the floor jack under the front cross member. Granted the race ramps will get the car high enough so you only need to jack the rear, but if you have limited storage space the race ramps do take up space for storage.

I use two sets of Rhino Ramps (12,000 lb version, about $39-49 per pair). The front spoilers (flexible) will scrap on going up but no damage.

I use a floor jack to lift up rear of car to place on second ramps. It gets car level for checking fluid in trans and diff. A poor man's lift !

I just use my motorcycle jack under the side to get it high enough for my floor jack to get onder the engine cradle.

I have used rhino ramps on the vette and it seems to work great. If you get ramps that the vette won't clear, you could always just get some 2x6's and lay them down to give a gradual incline. I've had to do that on my old Saleen which is pretty low from the factory. At least a lot lower than my stock height vette.

Do you mean LS1 engine?

LS1 to a Z06 sounds more logical, why would you downgrade a ZR1 if someone installed it in a C5

I built my own ramps. You will need jack stands. Caution; donot drive the front wheels onto the ramps. There is the chance the car will roll off the ramps as you jack up the rear. Better to back the car onto the ramps, apply the emergency brake and the jack up the front of the car. I like to have the car slightly lower in the front as the drain plug is on the front of the oil pan.

I now use a scissor lift to do the job.

x2. I enjoy building things though. Two piece design that is connected by pins in the middle so I can store them easier. I can also remove the ramp section once the car is on them to slide under it easier. I can drive onto them or back onto them. They clear both ends just fine.

I don't have a photo but here is a video of me rolling off of them after taking my stock exhaust off to install the Corsa.

Default Race Ramps are easy to store

I keep mine just below the garage door track which is otherwise an unusable storage space. I use the plastic tote wire brackets available for the Gladiator wall track system to store the incline sections and the standard hooks to hang the platforms. Race Ramps are light enough to easily lift over your head and into the brackets.

Another vote for Race Ramps. Super light-weight, non skid and no clearance issues.

The highlighted portion of meflytrc's post is very noteworthy. I have always used Rhino ramps for my Z06. A friend purchased some race ramps and let me try them. The Rhino's have a built in curve to fit the tires, the race ramps don't. I began jacking the rear of my Z the same way I did with my Rhinos and the damn thing rolled back off the ramps. Luckily for me I hit the release on the jack in a timely fashion or the Z would have rolled out of the garage, down the hill and into the trees.

Default Wheel chocks

Race Ramps recommends using wheel chocks behind the front tires when they are on the ramp platform. This is especially important if you are raising the rear of a RWD car where the front tires are free spinning. But, even if the rear tires are on the platform I would not trust the emergency brake alone. It's still a good idea to use wheel chocks with the rear tires too.

Chocking the rear wheels is a good idea. Also make sure it is in park for an A4 or in gear if it is a manual. That way you are not depending on the emergency brake only.

I love my Race Ramps! I roll onto the front ramps with roll-ups on the rear, jack at the crossmember to lift the rear and put them on cribs. Works perfectly; I have blue tape on my garage floor where everything needs to be positioned.
