So my father in law has a 1998 Convertible. He has replaced all the belts and even has changed all of the pulley's. There has been this squeal that has been going on since, before and after. Im not sure what else to do except pose the question on the forum. If anyone has any ideas it would greatly help us out. If you put a screw driver to the main pulley it will go away if you rev the engine really hard a couple times. It will go away. But always comes back. PLEASE HELP!!!!
By the "main pulley", do you mean thr one on the end of the crankshaft? If so, take a closer look. These are known for the rubber parts separating and causing "massive" engine damage. You need to see if the rubber is about to break loose.
I'm going to guess its the crankshaft pulley. Its a common problem on the c5/c6's. Its a big job to replace it. It is the lowest pulley down on the center of the engine. take a close look at it and see if you can see any wobble in the pulley while the car is idling.
your other problem could be a bearing type issue in the tensioner pulley. I dont recall without going out and looking at my c5 whether you have an idler pulley.
anyway, what you have described sounds just like a crank pulley that is separating. If it is the problem, it must be replaced asap before it comes off and does alot of engine damage. search it on the forum if you need to, its been reported thousands of times i'm sure.
I've had to replace both of my idler pulley's at different times due to the bearings having failed and of course both belts have been replaced. I'm still on my OEM balancer. There's an automotive stethscope(sp) at HarborFrieght for like $4.95 that works really well.
As far as I know all of the pulleys on the front of the motor have been replaced. I will ask him for sure. If you really stomp on the gas several times the squeal will go away. But it will come back.
