Default Air Pump, Can it be removed on header mod?

Is it typical to remove the smog pump and associated plumbing after header installation?

I've read where it's been done and I'm looking at a used set of long tubes that has a block off plate welded on the air tube flange. I don't know what the pros or cons of removing the system are.

My TSP headers dont even come with the flanges for the AIR. Search here about the flanges on some headers coming with block off plates as well as the welds cracking and breaking off.

My headers were installed Friday and we blocked off the a.i.r. tubes and I pulled the # 50 fuse from the under hood fuse box.
No codes so far with me!

The AIR Pump is located under the drivers side headlight. You can easily access it from under the car. Under the car on the drivers side you will find an access panel in the under side plastic. By removing the bolts to the access panel, it will hinge down and out of the way giving you room to unbolt the AIR pump and remove

You can then remove all associated plumbing to the system for a nice clean look and less clutter in the engine bay!

I do this on all of my Long Tube installs as I do not see any need for the set-up being as I do not have to pass smog.

Thanks Guys for the info. I'll probably eliminate it during exhaust mod. I wonder if it effects fuel mileage?

A few months ago my 17 year old son plowed down a mesquite tree, point of impact right where the driver’s side headlight is. Almost $10,000 in damage, I thought they would total it, but my insurance repaired it.

Anyways, I guess the insurance company has a parts list they go by, as does the dealer. My insurance said the dealer had a “part” on their list that the insurance list did not, and had to wait for approval for this “part”. I asked what the “part” was and they said it was the air pump. I guess being in Arizona, it is not required, but the car had California emissions on it…

So I guess it depends on the emissions requirements for the state you live in?

I think they put them in all the C5s. My old 98 and 99 coupe had them and they were Florida delivered cars and my 99 FRC has it and it's a Texas car. neither state has emission testing. I'm not really concerned with legality just performance.
