I have one C4 and two C5's. The C4 section has a lot of good people on it too. Lots of help and advice if you need it.
Even if you don't have a C5 any more, you don't need to be a stranger to the C5 forums. I liked your C5 and all the mods you made. It must have been hard to sell it.
Looking at "generic" used cars in the 5K range, there isn't much out there that stands out aside from a C4. I reallly don't want a 4 door car, and anything else is pretty much a turd. I don't want to waste money on a turd. At least if I get a C4 I still have something that performs well and is nice to drive - unlike a Camry, Accord or something like that. Those don't get very good mileage either, so it's not like it's a HUGE difference. I need the equity from the sale for other purposes, so 5K is about my budget for a car. If anyone has any good ideas (other than checking craigslist, etc.) I'm all ears. If not, I'm off to Sacramento tomorrow to pick up the 87.
Most uncomfortable cars I've ridden in, in quite awhile.
By 1989 they had worked out most of the bugs on the C4. The 84 was a very rough car almost bought one when they first came out,but they were just to hard. 89 and newer are a better choice. Good luck and most of us understand your situation. C4 is a good choice in that price range for an American Icon.
I had an 84 for 6 months before I got the C5. I really enjoyed it and to me it was quite comfortable. I prefer the seats and the steering to the C5 actually. I'm looking at a nice medium blue 87 with the Z52 package (same as the Z51 without the stiff springs) and 3.07 gear, and also looking at a Teal 91 with 57K on it. The 87 is less expensive but has 108K on it. It's all stock and in very good shape. The Teal one has some body damage from a basketball hoop falling on it while it sat in a barn. I'll get pics of that car tomorrow morning and decide which one from there.
The 90+ C4 has the better cockpit for sure, and the 91+ has the better exterior body.
Be prepared to spend some money rebuilding the electronic dash on pre 90 models. I used to smake mine to make them light up, but that got old and had to get them fixed. Nagging problem, and I have owned more than one C4.
