Difference between early c5 converts and later converts?
Folks,
I'm still a newbee and I'm trying to buy my first c5 Vert, though I've owned and restored lots of muscle cars. Recently someone on the list sent me a PM (thank you) saying that by 2001 most of the bugs were gone and 2002 through 2004 were basically as good as they got and were pretty much all the same. Again, I'm talking convertibles, so what was inferior about the 2000s and earlier?
Two things I recall were, the 2001 and later models went from 345hp to 350hp and the rag top was beefed up a bit for sound reduction, I believe.
Also, I think, in 2001, the thin spokes that had a tendency to crack were revamped to thicker spokes and the EBCMs(before 2001)are not rebuildable or available new.
Weatherstripping on the bottom of the rear edge of the top (where it sits on the black strip) was thickened so the top doesn't rub on the tonneau deck and wear away the paint. I have a '99 and will need to fix the wear spots but I did upgrade the weatherstripping. Not sure if it was fixed in 2000 or 2001.
In addition to the EBCM issue mentioned, pre 2001 key fobs and tire pressure monitors are MUCH more expensive to replace. Not enough difference IMO to turn down a good buy on a good car.
