Getting my Z16 hood back this week and the backside was painted and cleared, so it looks a whole lot better than stock. I don't think I am going to put on the hood insulation. Who else is running without it?
I have a carbon fiber tigershark, cleared the underside and do not use the hood liner no problems here. It looks better in person the flash from the camera really shows the carbon weaves and makes it look dull.

Another thing to consider is that I believe they are designed to help in the case of a fire as well. The plastic clips melt and the hood liner attempts to smother an engine fire, or atleast slow it.
If you are just worried about the heat difference there are thousands of Vettes out there not running the liner in order to paint the underhood like some examples above.
Very helpful thread, I'm going to remove mine as there are some wear spots from my air filter, S/C setup, and above the TB from an intake cover rubbing on it! Thanks
Thanks for the info. My hood liner is looking a little rough. I was thinking about taking it off and painting it but might just leave it off and see how that goes.
Mine was coming apart and hanging so I took it off. Been like that for the past three months or so. Word of warning, the hood is not completely finished underneath. GM only painted and cleared around the edges that the hood liner does not cover. Everything else is primer, paint, clear and and a mix of overspray.
Nowadays with modern fuel injection, hood insulators are intended for sound suppression of engine bay noise into the cabin. It was not the case in the old days of carburetors and backfires which damaged many hoods and paint.
I think doing away with the hood insulation provides a great canvas for some very creative art work as above. Even w/o any artwork, it sure cleans up the engine compartment.
