Default Go Pro Hero versus's Everything Else..

I've been looking at buying a Go Pro or similar video camera to mount on my car for certain track events and was trying to get some feedback on what people use and like. I've seen some before mounted on C5's but didn't get a chance to talk to the owners on likes and dislikes.

So if you use a Go Pro Hero or the Go Pro Hero2 or anything else that is easy to use and mount I would appreciate some feedback. I found these last night and seems like a pretty good deal for 2 of them..

Thanks

Love my GoPro Hero 2. You can't go wrong with the original or version 2, but I would suggest getting version 2. Better low-light performance, and more powerful sensor (images are crisper). That deal on eBay is pretty good, but try to find version 2 if you can. I had the original as well, and there's nothing wrong with it...great camera. But version 2 is even sweeter.

If you get the Go-Pro make sure you get the extra battery and perhaps a remote charger. My first time out I only got six - one minute videos. The camera was on a lot when not recording but I really expected better battery life than that.

Ok so I decided to research prices. Actually, that eBay deal isn't that great. You can get an original Go Pro Hero Motorsports for $160 right now:

gopro is the hero, dont buy anything else in a comparison test against other brands in the February edition car and driver you can judge for yourself. Me personally I have the gopro hero2 and the bac pac battery and lcd bac pac, god i love it. I would post some videos but dont know how to do that, lol. What ever you pick use it well.

The developer of GoPro is one smart person. they seem to be selling like crazy!!!

Anyone vendors here on the forum sell them? May be tough to deal with the higher volume outlets

If you feel like getting one, get the Hero HD 2. I have the Hero HD ("1") and my friend and I love it, but the upgrades they made to the 2 look to be pretty damn good. The low-light upgrades on the HD 2 would be a big plus to the HD.

If you get it, you'll want to also pick up the "battery backpack", it allows you to either double the battery life or be able to carry around a spare battery with charger. You'll also want to pick up a "handle bar mount" kit AND a "roll bar mount" kit, though double check on the roll bar mount for it's max diameter.

Note to folks, if you pick up the battery backpack, be sure to get the firmware update onto the camera first, the backpack causes some audio issues if you don't.

Just yesterday I picked up the three upgrades I just mentioned, and used the handle bar mount kit to attach the camera to my rear sway bar:

For some more examples of daylight / nighttime, heres what I've recorded before:

I have the Hero HD 1 and love it, I haven't tried any other brands, I also bought an extra battery and the LCD backpack, You can't go wrong with 1 or 2 in my opinion.

You can either eyeball it, which is all I've ever done, or spring the few bucks for the lcd screen that can mount to the back of the unit. Unless you're absolutely worried about it being spot on, eye balling it works just fine.

Something to note, and HD2 owners please chime in on this, but the audio recording quality on the HD(1) is not the greatest, at least when in the case and mounted on a car or something like that. This is why most vids you'll see have music over them.

Quick question on these...I've often thought it would be smart to have an onboard camera for protection, similar to what LEOs have in their patrol cars. My thought is if you leave the GoPro on permanently, will it record continuously, so in the event of an incident the important stuff will be captured? Kinda like a security camera that saves the last 30 days to disc, then you can save what you want and it starts the cycle over again.

Quick answer, No. It is limited to a memory card.

I think there's options to have it save directly to a computer hdd, or at least output to a external video display continuously, but then you'd have to work out a system to handle that data all the time.

Here's a walkaround with my gopro hero hd. I took it out of the case so get the best audio quality.

Great little camera. Only knock would be that the audio could be better. My old iphone 3gs captures better audio. Regardless, I would recommend it.

The Hero video is way better, I would rather have great video over audio, iPhone is over rated anyway and over priced.
After watching it again I think the Hero audio is better also.

I have nothing against the GoPro but I have a Contour 1080 HD camera.
I like its small size and rotating lens.I don't like the .MOV format.
I bought it over the GoPro because I got it at a super good price.
You can mount it in a lot more places than the GP.
