When I bought my 01 Z06 (about 3 years ago) it had a Blackwing on it. Felt great no complaints. I installed the Vararam VRB2 on the Z and the throttle response seemed sluggish until you pushed halfway down or mashed it to the floor. Never had any code issues with the Vararam never threw a code..nothing.
Yesterday, I decided I was going to compare the Vararam to the stock air box. I drove the Z with the Vararam first, obviously, drove around town and then did a couple pulls. Felt great from mid to full throttle. Went home pulled her in the garage and removed the Vararam and reinstalled the stock 01 air box. Drove around town, throttle response was better around town. I then did a couple pulls, through 4th gear, and the results were exactly the same as the Vararam (same mph).
With the Vararam there was no seat of the pants difference for me. I actually felt a more positive seat of the pants difference with the stock air box. I think the Vararam my pull to much air for a stock car. This is my second C5 with the Vararam and both felt sluggish after the install. Just my opinion and I do know that opinions are like a**holes, everybody has one and they all stink.

But the advertisement for the CAI kits say that you will boost your HP by 30 and you couldn't feel it in the seat of your pants? just kidding around. At the end of the day, if you like the looks of the "CAI" kit, it's just what you needed. Years ago I had an '01 Saleen Mustang SC 4.6 and I bought a supposed tuner's original design CAI kit and guaranteed to produce 30 extra horses. I went to the extreme and dyno'd the car before and after and, guess what...no increase. I challenged the "creator." And you wouldn't believe the flack I received; fortunately, being retired military, flack is just brushed away
First time I've heard about dual cones reducing performance. Any additional information behind this claim?
I have a Blackwing and NO they dont do much for performance in as enclosed engine compartment. The Blackwing does wake up performance if you cut the radiator shroud the diameter of the Blackwing. Also you can always get a spare shroud used from the forum, swap meets, etc. Unless you modify the shroud the Vararam may be youre only other choice because its designed to draw in cold air through the fog light openings.
