I did a search for this, found a little info, but still a little unsure.
I have a 97 coupe, with a short throw shifter. Not sure of the brand.
I noticed that sometime if I go to shift from 4th to 5th it grind a little. It goes into gear, but does grind a little. Usually at around 55 mph. If I go to like 65, it'll go right in. Also, if I shift at like 45-50 it goes right in. I'm thinking it might be a syncro. But I don't know if this is a common occurrence; I know there are proper and improper ways of shifting the vette. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. Thanks guys!

Yes its the syncros on its way out. Change out the fluid if you havent done so recently as it may help. No synthetic!

Thanks! Are synros expensive to replace for the corvettes?
Also, the dealership recommended using only mobile 1. Is mobile 1 the best full synthetic to use?
Earlier years use paper blocker rings instead of the carbon fiber ones. The paper blocker rings don't like synthetic. They're meant to work with regular Dexron III ATF.

He is speaking about the manual MN6 gearbox. It has Dex III tranny fluid in it. All the Borg Warner (Getrag) T-56 boxes have had tranny fluid since designed.
I agree that your syncro is probably toast, but a fluid change may buy you some time or avoid another one biting the dust. I am kinda wondering why the 5th went out, not 2 or 3. Must just be a bad part.

Bummer. I doubt that replacing the synchros is gonna be cheap. I am debating changing the fluids, putting in some Dexron III ATF, and using it as long as I can as I save up for an rpm level IV trans. For 2k for the transmission, It'd probably be worth it while they have it all out and apart.

I'm with you. Drive it as long as you can, save for what you REALLY want and enjoy even more.
