I'm quite handy and I even have a 4 post lift, but I would not tackle this job...gladly pay my chevy dealer to install one. I found a used one on the forum for $125. Rebuilts are $300 give or take....new from GM is over the top...don't bother. Autozone's is guaranteed for life, but around $325, if I remember correctly. Just be sure whatever problem you are having is truly the fault of the compressor...rule out everything else first to save grief and cash.

Thanks for the info frumnuttin and sounds like good advice.
We had the one on our 97 replaced last summer by a local trusted mechanic. John, and my dad and my son (a mechanical engineer that has worked for a super late model race team) wouldn't tackle this repair and they all have above average mechanical skills.
