Can anyone around the NW burbs of Chicago recommend a good glass shop? On the way in to work this morning the guy 4-5 car lengths in front of me tossed up a rock that cracked my windshield right in the center.
Can glass shops repair cracks? I would think that it would be better to replace the windshield altogether but I am scared that the new one will leak..
:(
There's an identifying number on the windshield, passenger side, bottom that identifies it as a HUD windshield. Don't know if that's sufficient or not ...
Thanks for the reply. I actually had that number written down when I was talking to the glass shop. Even with that information the only glass they pull up is for the coupe. Their reply.. "it should work..". Very scary!!
I almost want to go to the dealer but I'm afraid they don't do that type of work very often. What a pizzer.....

When I bought my Z06 new, the windshield was scratched in transit. It takes special glass. The dealer replaced it and had it inside a couple of days while the adhesive cured. No idea what it cost them (or the insurance company)
No leaks.
If it's a small crack that isn't much more than an inch long it can be repaired by the epoxy process. This will keep the crack from propagating, but you will be able to see it to one degree or another, especially when heading into the sun.
Call your insurance company. They will likely repair the crack at no charge if you go with the epoxy repair. The guys that do this are mobil, so they can do the job at your house or work. It takes about 30 minutes.
I recently had a small stone crack repaired on my Mercedes. A new windshield installed would have been about $600, and my deductable is $1000. I called USAA and they said they would repair the crack at no charge. I called their vendor and the guy was out the next morning to my house to do the repair, and he billed USAA about sixty bucks direct.
The crack is in the center or the windshield, about a third up from the bottom and is not in my line of site. I figure it's okay for now. The windshield has already been replaced once, and it will probably need it again at some point in the future when it takes another hit.
The Corvette windshield with the HUD is about $1500 as I recall, - much more expensive than non- HUD, so if you have a HUD and low deductable, it might just be best to replace it.
The non-HUD winshield in the '01 Z06 is different than the other non-HUD winshields. It is thinner. All '02 Z06 have the HUD, but I don't know if it's the same winshield as the coupe and convert. with HUD.
Thanks for the reply. After a little hunting I came upon the GM part number of 10315114. The glass shop said that this is the same glass as the vert with the HUD.
Sorry for the rocks in our world, but the Z06 windshield and rear window are thinner than the vert and coupe keep on looking for the right windshield! :chevy
Move to Florida. State law requires insurance companies to replace cracked windshields free of charge with no deductible. I have had many windshields replaced on other cars and only had one leak. That was easily fixed on a second trip to the glass shop. They can even come out to your home here and replace it in less than an hour. :)
Re: Cracked windshield. Comments appreciated.. (Nestor D. White)
The windshield is covered under my comprehensive insurance so the only cash out of pocket will be my $500 deductible. That’s not too bad, it just $500 less in my mod fund.
I am more concerned with having the right windshield installed. Everyone says that the Z06 glass is “lighter” and that it is different glass then the convertible. After speaking with several different glass shops and three different GM dealers, I have been unable to track down this elusive GM part number. I have had three different establishments supply me with the following GM part number : GM 10315114. The following part number also corresponds with the convertible with the HUD. So as long as the HUD is clear and I have no leaks I will be happy. Wouldn’t a “heavier” glass be less susceptible to cracks anyhow?
The install is scheduled for this morning. I will keep everyone posted.. Thanks again for the kind words and suggestions. Unfortunately, this is not my first mishap with my new ride…
Be prepared to let it set for at least four hours and don't let it get wet for 24 hours.
The 8th of this month was my Lightning's 1 year anniversary and while on I-75 going to lunch I 'met' a rock at 70 mph--two long cracks. With a $500 deductable the ins. co. recommended to let them call their glass installer and get me the best price. I did so and the next morning the installer replaced the w/s in 45 mins. Had to stay at work and eat snacks that day--I didn't know about the 'wait'. He did a good job and the PPG glass looks factory.
Last I heard the windshield was $1700.00, it should be the same glass as the vert or coupe, as long as it is HUD glass. The rear window of the Z is the thinner window.
For future reference, I was given another part number from a helpful individual on another board. His response:
"The 2002 Chevy Performance Parts Catalog on Page 181 lists this:
Part # 10426201 - Z06 Light Weight Windshield"
I'm not sure why the GM dealer would not have found it.
 Oh well....
The install went fine yesterday and the glass looks like an exact match, but it might be a tad heavier. I might just take a few CD's out of the glove box to make up the diff...
The real test will be the first car wash (next weekend). The shop here in Schaumburg, IL (Auto Glass Service) did an outstanding job.
I can see this as a potential problem for owners when getting the windshield replaced. As we all know GM said the Z06 had "special" lightweight. A friend of mine is an independant glass installer, and I asked him about it. His catalogs and suppliers new nothing about the LW glass. Kind of a one size fits all. I guess you could buy the glass from GM, but most of these glass installers get their glass from a wharehouse type of deal.
The 2002 Z06 and 2002 Vert w/ HUD use the same lightweight windshield.
Markings on windshield:
2001 Z06: 4.8MM Shaded
2001 Coupe/Vert w/ HUD: Shaded HUD
2002 Z06: 4.8 MM Shaded HUD
2002 Vert w/ HUD: 4.8 MM Shaded HUD
2002 Coupe w/ HUD: Shaded HUD
The lightweight windshield only weighs 2 lbs less.
I had my windshield replaced and ended up with the thinner HUD windshield. I stopped by a dealer to verify the thinner glass in the 2002 vert since it is a large part of my rollover protection.
